HTML help files

Submitted by snootyjim on February 27, 2008 - 5:53am

Hi

I'm trying to convert a set of documents containing research for a physics coursework from word documents over to HTML so that they'll easily link over to other websites, and will open files from the CD which I'll eventually hand in via references.

USB Read/write speed the only factor?

Submitted by mmcdougall on February 26, 2008 - 3:18pm

I tested the flash drives I own, and found that the one I was using for portable apps wasn't the one with the fastest read/write times & access times by a fair margin. So, I moved all my portable apps to the faster drive.

However, when I used the new drive (using Firefox), I actually found it to be slower. There seemed to be more & longer pauses in using Firefox while it accessed the flash drive.

This doesn't make sense, unless there's more to it than read/write speed. Can anyone comment? Is this all in my head or is there more to it?

File associations

Submitted by nttuzydupcpm on February 26, 2008 - 2:19pm

How do I control file associations? I used to be able to go to the Windows Explorer at Tools\Folder Options and specify what executable would run documents. Usually I did this in conjunction with copying Portable Apps to my work hard drive, but last night they erased everything, and now I can't set file associations: I can navigate through the Tools\Folder Options like before, but when I select a Portable App, my WinXP box acts like I never told it anything.

Is this an Administrator thing that I'm stuck with?

Any launchers that do NOT save on exit?

Submitted by paladintom on February 26, 2008 - 11:38am

Hi All,

I am looking for a launcher that does not attempt to write to my usb drive on exit. I prefer to just remove the drive and sometimes forget to close the launcher software. If I try to then close the application, I get an error because the path is now invalid.

I've tried all the top launchers and the only one that does not do this is PortableApps 1.0 which I do not like for the lack of customizable features. Perhaps one app has a setting that I may have missed that prevents the launcher from writing to disk EVERY TIME it closes?

Forum request

Submitted by PortaGuy on February 25, 2008 - 9:29pm

Hi,

I wanted to add a comment to this topic:

Dia - A program for drawing structured diagrams
https://portableapps.com/node/1347

...but there was no Reply link, so the topic has probably been closed.

However, the modification technique the guy suggested in the topic had an error, and I wanted to correct it in case anyone else (like me!) is trying to find out how to run Dia portably.

Here's my post (below), in case you can add it there.

Thanks, Ander

No I'm not asking for a tool... I just found one. I thought I'd share it because I recall a bunch of you guys have been looking for something like this, so here it is. My apologies if this has been posted 7013 times before.

Looking for simple Timer / Reminder - Tool

Submitted by atreiju on February 25, 2008 - 8:22am

Hi,

I'm looking for a very simple, lightweight, portable Timer / Reminder - Tool.
It should be possible to set

1. a time, when it has to remind me.
2. a timer, to remind me after 45min.
3. the text for the message-window, which should appear when the time has come.

That's all. Of course it would be great to have other options, like shutdown windows etc, but that's not important, because i have an other tool for that.

Thanks for any suggestions!
