What if I loose my USB Stick - Re; Encription

Submitted by darchorse on February 21, 2008 - 8:07am

Hello, Just joined so this is probably a question that has already been asked a million times so please forgive my ignorance to ask again.

If I loose my USB drive I want to keep my info safe. Is it possible when someone tries to open the "portable apps" menu they will be presented with a user name password dialog that prevents them from going any further, thereby making the stick useless? Preferably the dialog is presented before any window showing files etc comes up.

TIA Darc

Automated GUI program using ClamWin as a Memory Scanner

FYI: This an continuation from https://portableapps.com/node/5449#comment-66537
You might want to read what is there first.

A bunch of people here came up with the great idea of using a .bat file to run a ClamWin memory scan every time that you plugged in your drive. But I don't like the ugly DOS prompt. Blum Biggrin So I wrote a nice little program, that will start a scan, but only show a blinking tray icon. If ClamWin finds anything, a window will pop up and tell you what it found. You then can save the report off as a file.

building usb stick -> questions + firefox portable not only saves on usb-stick?!?

Submitted by Stupsi2k on February 20, 2008 - 12:04pm

hey.

am currently building an usb-stick.
here some questions:

1. do i need a firewall when i launch usb-stick-applications at my own pc, where anyway is a firewall + antivirus installed? is the usb-stick an own "environment"?

2. are the progs really caching on the stick // is there really nothing saved on the real computer? for example the cache of "firefox portable".

config ini

I like to request PortableApps start putting the configuration ini into the correct path. I think this putting an configuration ini somewhere where it not belongs is not very useful anyway.

Yeah, I could move them manually, but I usually assume I dont have to move any files to configure software. And I assume there is no need for users to bother with the ini file at all in most cases.

I was wondering if there was any open source spyware protection, cause it would be nice to have on a usb, since if u have seen my previous forum, https://portableapps.com/node/11390 then u will know y this would be usefull to me. it would help me feel more secure, because our school computers have been infected with DARKUSB and who knows what else there might be that comes with it. Anywho any links or names of spyware protecting software would be appreciated.

Complex Issues

Hi John,

I understand the concern about licenses, copyright and trade marks and so you should. Bus I have a few remarks on this regard:

1. First how do you know in general that people did not ask permission from Mozilla and got it? In fact, how do we know you got the permission to redistribute FireFox while others have not? Would it be impossible for individuals to obtain permission while companies are more likely to obtain permission? Is there a way to check who has permission or not?

Question on submission

Hi there.
I wonder what is the process for submission of apps for portableapps.com ? I have made a lot of portable apps (in fact, all my apps have portable versions) , but they are not in beta, so no need to drop a message to the beta posting forum - or it is still the process ?

Michael.

downloading problems with PortableApp

Submitted by Gary Segers on February 18, 2008 - 10:24am

I'm having a heck of a time downloading PortableApps and have tried finding the answer on the board to no avail. Am using Firefox 2.0 and want to install PortableApps to my Sans Disck Cruser 2 GB flashdrive. I have the U3 Launchpad installed on the flashdrive.

When I try to install the program on my desktop directory or my flashdrive I get an error message saying the PortableApps ex is "not a supported archive". I'm unable to install download on either my desktop G drive where I keep my downloads or to the flashdrive.
