Choice full version or light version

Submitted by christophe on September 16, 2006 - 10:25pm

I use a mp3 player with a 40gb hd (Toshiba Gigabeat) for 8 months now.
I use it every day at work and at home.
I load it with all the portable applications of this site and some more.

I was wondering if it would be possible to have the choice to install the full version of a program or the light version (the one you provide actually).
As hard drive on usb are fast and don't have problem of space or limit of read write cycle , it would be good to have this choice and also to have the settings like a standard install ( example : for firefox, do not disable the cache .....).

I hope one day I can put all the program I used on my player drive so no more computer to transport Smile

Submitted by Bobvark on September 14, 2006 - 9:52pm

I mostly use portable appz so I don't have to install programs. So without installing how to easily set file associations. I found Open Expert
http://www.baxbex.com/ox2.html

worked great so far, next i want to test and see where it saves it's files and be able to save that info. Anyway just thought it might help some others.

I also found
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tweak/tweak-0.8.42.zip?use_default=su...
a command line file association tool. I could just make a bat file to register them all.

hummmmm which to do.

you guys could write bat files that run at pstar

Kingston Data Traveller Elite - launchers being lost

Submitted by paladin2006 on September 14, 2006 - 1:00pm

I have been using a selection of portable apps for some months on my Data Traveller Elite 1GB. It has been working really well.

In the past two days the Firefox and Thunderbird launchers have just disappeared. I reinistalled FF and TB and all was fine for a day. Now the launchers are again not visible at the file system level. PStart can't see the launchers either. I always eject the drive.

Has anybody seen this happen before? What is going on?

Thanks in advance.

Bug Squashing Weekend

I'm planning on doing some bug squashing this weekend in preparation for the upcoming Suite release and wanted to be sure I've got everything on the To-Do list that needs doing. Right now, the list consists of:

All app launchers:
- Review trailing slashes in initial directory setups (causes issues with Win9x on a couple apps like Firefox in certain directories)
- Review split apps directory structure to ensure settings directory is applied (this affects Gaim, GIMP and a couple others)
- Ensure new GetParameters function is used so all apps are compatible with Unicode command lines (like filenames/paths)

CommonFiles Directory Structure (GPG, Java, etc)

As a part of the directory standardization, I'm thinking about adding a CommonFiles directory. This would be handy for binaries that are shared among multiple applications. GTK+ would be an obvious example (used by Gaim and GIMP). Java would be another candidate for the future.

In adding on to the proposed directory structure, we'd get:

\ (Drive Root)
  - Documents
    - Music
    - Pictures
    - Videos
  - PortableApps
    - CommonFiles
      - GTK
    - FirefoxPortable (etc)
    - GaimPortable (etc
...

As an example, the Gaim launcher, if it didn't find GTK in the internal directory, would check the PortableApps\CommonFiles\GTK directory.
