Portable Screen magnifier??

Submitted by Luanialus on June 7, 2006 - 3:31pm

Hey Gang I teach kids that are visually impaired, a big issue with them and many people with visual impairments, is that they are roped down to one machine since that is what has their software on it so they are able access the computer. Most my students are still print readers they just need the screen enlarged, I've looked into open source alternatives to the screen enlarger they use and honestly none of them that I have found come close to comparing to zoomtext or magic which are the applications of choice for many people with visual impairments. I have this software and licenses to it, but I would love a way to make it to where it could run from a USB drive so the kids could use, say any computer in the library or at the school if they need to. I understand there are likely restrictions to modifying the software in the EULA which is the hang up to it all, but man this would really make a great change in the world of people with visual impairments if they had an app that could travel with them. If I knew anything about coding I'd try to do this myself but I haven't a clue where to start in making an application portable. Is there anyone that would be willing to assist me in this? Thanks a ton! visionteacher at gmail dot com, if you don't want to post here. Forgive me please if I’m disregarding any list etiquette, it’s not my intention.

Requesting: PortableGIMPshop

Submitted by The Ðjïn on June 7, 2006 - 1:25pm

Yeah, I know there is already a PortableGIMP, but sometimes people are more familiarized with Photoshop. There is a portable photoshop, but obviously is an unauthorized hack, therefore illegal. Maybe you've heard of this GIMPShop, which is a mod from the original GIMP, and resembles Photoshop in names, menus [structure], and instead of multiple windows, there's a Deweirdifier, which makes it a Single Window environment, and well... IT'S AWESOM!!! The bad thing is that there's still no portable GIMPShop, so pleeeeeease, someone do the world a favor. [I would, if I knew how]

Newsgroups Download Manager capable of using .NZB file type.

As a member of newzbin.com i make great use of the .nzb filetype that they utilise.

I know there are many "newsgroup readers" out there but not many make use of nzb's

I personally use "grabit" but this might not be portable. Here's a list of nzb compatible appz. Any thoughts?

Portable winscp for remotely working on your (webserver(s))

Submitted by comedit on June 4, 2006 - 7:32pm

I have my own webserver running at home and I travel alot for my work. The company has secured the laptop I carry so much it is hard to get to your own server (as soon as I use portnumbers the VPN-firwall starts to protest.)

I sneak my way around this by carrying linux livecd's around (suse and kubuntu), but as many other users might confirm you do switch back and forth between linux and windows to get your work done.

Anyhow I found this java program Unitty which is a bit like winscp but not as good. Filezilla is ok for ftp but when you need to start putting in commandlines root access, no connection time outs etcetera, then winscp is a good solution.
