The future of portable management of applications?

OK. First of all I'm one of those who joined here, used the applications heavily, wanted to contribute then out of a sudden stopped visiting. I see the site is still going strong - but what's new? What's actually happening here? No, I don't mean as in "we're intending to get freeware applications too". I mean, where are we going with the portable applications? Are there any plans for any better management of the applications (locally)?

Clean Chrome(-ium) portable incl. sourcecode

Submitted by portable.me on September 26, 2008 - 2:45pm

While I was looking for a portable version in addition to the current offered ones for comparision I found that one.
It's free under bsd license but I didn't had enough time to toy around with it yet.
Also uses the latest version of WebKit (525.19) like Safari, Google's Chrome however still 525.13.
no tracking, no client-id, timestamp, etc.

PortableApps Suite copy to local harddrive?

Submitted by nottRobin on September 25, 2008 - 12:39pm

Hiya.

I've been using the PortableApps suite, and while it is a great idea, it has one major flaw: it runs all the applications off the USB device.

This leads to certain applications (e.g. Firefox) running really rather slowly because they have to write to the USB device regularly.

The only real solution to this, if one wants to keep one's applications running within PortableApps suite (which is convenient) is to copy the whole PortableApps suite to the hard drive before running it, and then copy it back again when you're done. This is rather time consuming.

PeaZip 2.3a released

Submitted by giorgiotani on September 23, 2008 - 6:15am

New releases introduces ability to use private configuration files for separate users (which is not an issue for the protable version), new functional keys and new dialog asking password, destination and other options while extracting archives from system's menu.
The application comes packaged with all available language files: Czech, German, English, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.
Any help to update language files and deploy new localizations is very welcome!

Spybot S&D Permission

horusofoz's picture
Submitted by horusofoz on September 22, 2008 - 4:18am

Hi Guys

Earlier today I emailed Spybot S&D asking if there had been any progress with the porting of their application and received an email saying it there was already one in the works. They gave me to links, one of which was to https://portableapps.com/node/2110

I saw this was stopped in 2006 so I am writing to see if this amounts to enough permission to allow the launcher to be further developed unto a dev test release after which I would think there would need to be some formal/legal permission given.

The email is below

LaTeX -. TexUSB apps

Submitted by Sir_R on September 21, 2008 - 3:56pm

Hi, all LaTeX fans.

I really don't have the technical expertise so maybe someone else can help me.

All the LaTeX assorted apps in the development area has not been tested for a while. Still I need some portable version of LaTeX. What I have found is the following:

But it is still a bit crude. Maybe someone can make it better?

At least, I would be very greatful.

Good luck

But the problem I am having is, I don't have administrator privilegs, and MSINET.OCX is not in System32 and it requires it, I want it to run from my USB stick system32 instead of the computers...Make sence?
