Problems with Portable firefox after it updated itself

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 3, 2006 - 3:38am

Portable firefox was working well but last night the application decided to update itself to a newer version that doesn't seem to work. I have a backup of my drive so it is not a huge problem but I would like to know if I can stop it updating itself or whether there is a new version of potable firefox I should be using?

Flash Download Error

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 2, 2006 - 3:45pm

I'm trying to install Flash onto my PFF installation. I've added the site to the whitelist and when I try to download the extension as per the instructions at https://portableapps.com/support/portable_firefox#plugins, I get "Firefox could not install the file at http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer... because: Download error".

I've tried using the likes of MozRegKey, downloading the installer manually and installing directly to the plugins folder, copying the necessary dll to the plugins folder (which is only Flash 6) and still having no luck.

Any

embedded 128-Bit encryption possible!?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 2, 2006 - 3:16pm

Is it possible to embed such a encryption into the portable firefox so that the host system is not needed to make a secure connection!?

e.g. Win 98/NT need the High Encryption Pack installed so the portable firefox can use the 128-bit enryption.

or if this is not possible is there a stand-alone secure application which can used for example on a usb stick which also contains the portable firefox and give him the possibility to make such a secure conection?

Partial Updates failing....

It seems that despite the fact that partial updates worked in testing (1.5 RC1 to 1.5 RC2), they are failing in the field. The second full update will work, though. I'm going to try and figure out what's up as, in theory, they should be working. I'll file a bug with bugzilla if need be.

pFF failing name lookups?

Submitted by RagManX on February 2, 2006 - 11:48am

I have been trying to use pFF on a system at work, but have run in to a problem that has me stumped. I have FF installed previously, but had to remove it because applications may not be installed on work computers. I got my boss to OK my using FF, provided I could do it without installing it. Naturally, I already knew about pFF when I approached him about this, so I just popped my USB key into the system and started up pFF. When it loads, I can not connect to any sites, because name lookups always fail. I'm not at the system now to give the exact error, but I will post that when I get to work tonight. I do remember it being something along the lines of "bleh.meh.domain.xxx could not be found" for any site I try to access. The application works fine at home, and as noted above, FF when installed worked fine. Just pFF is having a problem. It doesn't matter if I run from a local directory or my USB key.

Firefox Update v1.5.0.1

Submitted by daves on February 1, 2006 - 7:08pm

Helloo and thanks for a great PA!
I'm wondering if i can update Portable Firefox v1.5 to v1.5.0.1 with the 'Check for updates' dialogue? Will it remain Portable Firefox and everything as such or become/convert to the normal Firefox?

Cheers
