Thunderbird Portable

I want my Thunderbird Portable 3.1.6 to be a default mail client in Windows 7. The main problem why I can not do this is that there is no Thunderbird Portable in default programs list in Windows 7. There is Thunderbird in the list but it is not portable one. The same story was when I wanted to make my Firefox Portable browser as a default browser. I have a folder that is 188 MB. When I open Thunderbird, it rebuilds that msf file it tells me that I only have 27 messages in the folder. I know that there are a lot more than that.

I have tried deleting the msf file and restoring it from a backup. The msf for the backup file rebuilds with only 27 messages as well.

Is there a way to get the entire folder back or is it a total loss?

I have become such a fan of the flexibility and versatility of Thunderbird Portable that I am now wondering why one should bother with the standard Thunderbird at all. True, Tbird Portable is slower on a flash drive than the standard installation is on a hard drive, but if one is willing to sacrifice speed, why not go with the portable version? This question may strike experienced users as naive, but I wonder what one really loses by foregoing the standard version.

Thunderbird portable 3.1.6 on Win 7 Ultimate.

Till now it worked well for me. But today a tragedy happened...

Here's the thing. My business mailbox just exceeds its quota, so I log in on my browser, and removed all my mails (hundreds of them) in the inbox. After this I checked Thunderbird, and to my surprise, all mails in the inbox disappeared too!!!

My inbox policy is set to "save all the messages" and apparently this mechanism failed somehow.

Could anybody provide a solution to retrieve the mails??? Any suggestion is appreciated!!

Since I have finally gotten internet service at home, I would like to use Thunderbird fully installed on my PC. Is there any way to transfer my profiles, mail, etc to the version installed locally? I saw one method mentioned, but that was over 3 years ago, and I'm not sure if the file/directory structure has changed or not. Suggestions?

I used to run Mozilla Thunderbird Portable from a U3 launchpad preinstalled on my Sandisk cruzer 16GB. Unfortunately I broke the cruzer but, luckily, I was able to recover all the data as they were phisically stored on it (now safely on a folder of my laptop). Question is: how can I transfer all back on another USB memory card (which doesn't have U3 installed) and run Thunderbird Portable as before with the same old data in it?

I do not want to copy the data of my desktop profile. Can I do this?

The problems are two: Changing the "local directory" to point to a USB stick, and if that is managed, problem with local folders being deleted from USB stick.

I work at a university. Users on our network have no administrative privileges. Our main campus IT discourages the use of any e-mail client (advocating using the web interface, which is truly awful). Our local IT department is stretched unbearably thin; they would install regular TBird if they had time to do so for me, but they really don't -- it takes months to get any custom software installed.

I recently installed TB Portable 3.1.6 on a portable USB drive. The transfer of static TB to the portable went fine, and it runs as expected on Win-XP.
However, when I take the drive to either a Vista or Win7 system (I've tried both, on both x32 & x64 based PCs), I get a popup window during the startup with the following message:
