And So I Say My Farewells....

Submitted by Patrick Patience on October 12, 2009 - 11:39pm

Hey guys, it's me... that guy. I know it's been a while. I've literally abandoned the forums over the past year, not out of spite or anything of course.

Here's my non-chronological story:

Back (oh, man, what was it...?) a good three years ago come this January / Febuary I stumbled upon PortableApps.com. Just like many of you, I grew up running Windows machines. I was just an average kid who spent too much time on the computer.

Why, hello there.

Hey guys,

Long time, no see, eh? I must say, it has certainly been quite a while since I've been on the forums or even doing anything PA related. So, on that note, it's nice to see you all again. Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Wink While I've been gone I've been doing a variety of things, such as school stuff and working on other projects.

I see that in the meantime quite a bit of stuff has happened, so congratulations on winning in the SF Community Choice awards! There are ~20 pages on the tracker of unread posts, so I'll be taking a look at those at some point.

The Tower of Babel in the Land of PortableApps.com

Starting summary

We're switching the Menu from Delphi at some time, it's best if we do it soon, before it becomes too big a job, and also to get into the cross-platform market quickly; currently the best-looking options are C++/wxWidgets and PHP/PHP-GTK. (For launchers as well as the whole Platform.)

VSS Support

I am disappointed to say that Toucan will not use the Volume Snapshot Service in a future version. The idea behind VSS is that it allows you to copy files which are in use, for example an Outlook .pst file whilst Outlook is open. As there were a number of requests for this feature, and indeed I too thought it would be useful I have had it on the todo list for a while, and indeed I intended to have it added for version 2.1.3 which is now in pre-release here.

Theming GIMP Portable

I'm utilizing a customized GTK theme for the GIMP, called Murrina Night Orange.  A copy is available here, if you would like to try or see it. You'll need to replace "MurrinaNightOrange" with whatever the name of the theme is that you're trying to get the GIMP to run in. I've tested these instructions with GIMP version 2.6. These instructions apply exactly to package version 2.6.6.0.
Otherwise, think of it more as guidelines :D.
Let me give you the usual caveats:

    Guess Who's Back, Back Again...

Patrick's back, tell a friend (guess who's back, guess who's back...).

~ you can hit me for that, it's totally deserved

So, winter if over and I say it's time I came out of hibernation. I randomly woke up every couple of weeks for the sole purpose of replying to some random forum topic. I'm sure you all missed me dearly, as I did you *waves*.

anyways it's been a long time since I posted here in my blog at portableapps.com.
Some updates I am working on will be

    • A New NSISPortable Pre-Release (using John's Patch he made, even loaded my a test computer with the beta version of Windows 7 for testing)
    • also a new release for dvdstyler to 1.7.2 to hopefully push it into a full release and move it from Pre-Release stage

    howdy all,

Just want y'all to know that I am going to be working on more releases of apps to come like NSISPortable and another release of DVDStylerPortable too. For DVDStylerPortable, I finally got around to fixing a small empty folder left behind in the appdata folder. NSISPortable is a project I took on from the other Zach on the team with the surname of Hudock. This is going to pre-release as soon as I package it up.

Source on SVN (mine, at least)

I've personally wanted to have the launcher and installer source code on Subversion for a *long* time, it makes things so much easier.

So, I figured, I'd put my money (what little I have) where my mouth is, and as of today, both WinMerge Portable's source and Songbird Portable's source are available from http://padp.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

I'm not intending to include the original app's binaries on SVN, as SVN is no place for binaries. I've made one exception to this rule: sqlite3.exe is available with Songbird Portable as it's so small, and it's not part of Songbird itself.
