Firefox 4 combines icons on taskbar

Submitted by GlennAllen on March 8, 2011 - 3:00pm

I just started using Firefox 4 Portable for testing, and I notice that the icons for it combine on the taskbar, which doesn't happen with the Fx3 icons. Why? what change in PAF/Fx causes this? any "fix"? (It's going to be a real pain to have to open the preview every time to select the instance I want instead of just clicking on it in the taskbar.)

Thanks.

Automatic updater

Submitted by tvme on March 8, 2011 - 8:20am

Hi,

I just read a post asking about updating and saw there is and automatic updater included with the latest release. Before I get the new version, is there an option to turn this off, just not down load, or uninstall?

I don't want ANYTHING updating or calling home without permission. My normal internet connection is limited. I only update applications at libraries.

Thanks,
Bob

tip: make sure firefox cache is set to >0 MB

Submitted by bpmackow on March 7, 2011 - 7:15pm

I discovered today that the default setting in Firefox Portable is to have the cache be set to 0 MB. This results in Firefox running very slowly. So by simply increasing the cache size, to say 75 MB, it will run significantly faster.

So if any of you are noticing Firefox Portable running slowly, try increasing the cache size.

Firefox start page

Submitted by gris on March 5, 2011 - 11:29pm

I wish to save the Firefox start page of the 4.0 beta 12 portable version, a Google search page containing the Firefox logo, but in the navigation tab there appears only "about:home" instead of the usual URL address. When I entered "about:home" in version 3.6, it made no sense. Please could someone advise how the about:home can be translated into a URL that can be inserted in the usual navigation tab in another browser.

Clarification on updating Firefox Portable?

Submitted by Kernel on March 5, 2011 - 11:07pm

I would like some clarification on the best procedure to update Firefox Portable.

Obviously, the easiest way to do it is through the app's update feature. However, while the forum FAQ says that's fine, the support FAQ says that it may leave some extraneous data behind, and some of the forum posts say it will screw up Add-ons/Extensions.

What is the correct answer as to how using the internal update feature will affect things?

Forgot to close app before pulling out the USB stick, now FFP doesn't seem to run at all.

Is there any way I can salvage some data, or do I need to go back to my last backup of it? My USB Stick still appears to work, it's just that Firefox Portable is now not working on any computer I've plugged the USB Stick into (2 tried so far). Even Safe Mode doesn't seem to work.

Best regards,
Steven.

New Minefield paf.exe, please?

Submitted by vasa1 on February 24, 2011 - 11:24pm

Hi!

Is it possible to make a new paf.exe for the latest Minefield?

FirefoxPortableNightly_4.0_Beta_12_Pre_English_online.paf.exe doesn't work since the more recent Minefield is like firefox-4.0b13pre.en-US.win32.zip.

In other words, 13 not 12.

Or can one just fiddle with the installer.ini of the "12" paf.exe and change 12 to 13 using a text editor? Or will more changes (beyond my competence) be needed?

Will this be sufficient?
