Can U3 apps usable in portableapps.com?

Submitted by erothoff on March 7, 2007 - 2:09am

I have been reading the forums a lot on how to get Skype working in portable apps, and actually had a U3 USB drive for about two weeks. (Bought it at OfficeMax and returned it two weeks later because I didn't like it. No problems.) And I see that Skype has a U3 application. So my question is, could a wrapper or launcher be written to allow U3 applications to work in portableapps.com. U3 claims to be a standard, so I don't think there is any copy infringments,

Auto Start PortableApps Menu

Submitted by buddy2z on March 5, 2007 - 9:24pm

I am sorry if this has already been posted, but I have read many different answers on how to do this, and I want a specific, clear answer.

I was wondering if there is any way that I can get the PortableApps Menu to start automatically when I plug in my USB Flash Drive, like the U3 platform does. When I installed the Menu, the file autostart.inf changed my drive name to PORTABLEAPPS (G:), so I deleted it. I do not know if that stopped it from running, but is there any other way to have it AutoStart?

Are several autorun options possible?

Submitted by johnnyh on March 5, 2007 - 11:26am

I have the standard autorun.inf:

[Autorun]
Open=PortableApps\PStart\Pstart.exe
Action=Open PStart
Icon=PortableApps\PStart\Pstart.exe, 0
Title=PStart

However, I would like to add another program (a synch app to backup the drive when I am at home) to the autorun menu.

Is there a simple way to do this within the .inf? I've tried a few variations to no avail.
thanks, JH!

Drive Problems

Submitted by buddy2z on March 4, 2007 - 9:39pm

When I plug my Memorex u3 TravelDrive in to my computer, it goes to the G:/ Drive and is called PortableApps. The icon for this drive is also missing. I tried to rename the drive, but on My Computer and everywhere else I can access the drive, it says it is named "PortableApps (G:)". Is there any way that I can rename my TravelDrive and also replace the drive icon? Thank You.

Blocking Scripts At PA.com

I am currently using the NoScript extension to block scripts at PA.com from google-analytics.com and googlesyndication.com.

The reason, I hate all things google.

What do these scripts do?
Am I "hurting" PA.com but not allowing them to run?
Does PA.com make some money or get some useful information by allowing them to run? If so I will allow them to run. If not I will continue to block them.

Note, I do not consider them in any way to be dangerous, but they are google, and for me that's normally reason enough.

Oldie but a goody: SimCity Classic for Windows appears fully portable.

I recently pulled out the install CD for SimCity Classic to see if it might be portable (or portable-ized) and was gratified to see that it does seem to be.

The Windows version appears to just be a re-dressed version of the original DOS program with some additional sounds added, so no registry entries are created of course.

It's not the latest-greatest version of this great game, but I think I spent all of ten dollars on it a couple of years ago. It's gotta be cheap if not free, if it's still available out there at all.
