PAM Builder

Submitted by DataCloud0365 on May 20, 2016 - 9:26am

I can't figure out how to apply the themes I make using PAM Builder to the PortableApps drive menu. It appears to me that you cannot apply themes other than the ones listed in the "options" tab. This is very frustrating because this app looks very promising once I know how to use it. Now I do like some of the themes the drive menu comes with, however there is a limited amount and I would really like to personalize my drive menu (like you can personalize Windows) but I can't find a way to apply the themes I make. Am I the only one who is frustrated with this

Latest Teamviewer update

Portable Teamviewer's latest update requires exiting the Teamviewer prior to installing the update, This is not a problem if you are doing a local update. An update on a remote computer is a different situation.

You can't update while Teamviewer is running but you need it for remote access. Google's Chrome browser has an app-for-that.

Security Flaw in 7-Zip DLL affecting multiple Portable Apps and Portable Apps Platform

Submitted by PortableGood on May 13, 2016 - 6:27am

Note that a CRITICAL security flaw has been discovered in 7-Zip.

All apps that use 7-Zip libraries can also be affected by this severe vulnerability.

This likely includes quite a few of the Portable Apps offered on this site, and may include the Portable Apps Platform itself.

The 7-Zip team has released a new version of their tool that (hopefully) patches the vulnerability, but every app that uses the vulnerable libraries also needs to be updated with patched versions of the libraries... otherwise they will still be vulnerable to this issue.

What exactly does the "platform" do?

Submitted by Rebeccah on May 8, 2016 - 4:06pm

I'm familiar with the concept of portable applications, and I use the portable version of many of the applications that I use on a daily basis. But they don't need any special "platform" to run them - you just unzip them, and the configuration information is kept in a file instead of in the Windows registry. You can put the whole thing on a USB drive if desired, or wherever you want. So what exactly is the purpose of this PortableApps "platform"? What does it do? Why should I install it?

Thanks,

Rebeccah

How can I clone my USB thumb drive?
I have portable app installed with quite a few applications and I would like to replace my old USB 2.0 stick

USB Thumb Drive Health Monitor

Submitted by drober05 on May 4, 2016 - 8:50am

I find myself using my PortableApps thumb drive more and more to the point where it is my primary mobile computing environment. I used to take my personal laptop with me on all trips, now I simply take my PortableApps thumb drive. This leads me to wonder if there is any way to monitor the health of my thumb drive? I know there are HDD health monitor apps like CrystalDiskInfo that use S.M.A.R.T. information available from the drive but I don't think this works for USB thumb drives. Anyone have any ideas to get early warning of problems with a thumb drive?

Changing icons of some folders - Desktop.ini

Submitted by michele.bartole... on April 28, 2016 - 11:51am

Dear Forum,

I'd like to customize the icons of some of my PortableApps folders, my favourite ones, to notice them more quickly above the others. For example, I'd like to change the icon for the ThunderbirdPortable folder; so, I created a specific icon, I placed it in the ThunderbordPortable folder and also created a Desktop.ini file as following:

Sourceforge blocked by Google Chrome (Resolved, non-issue)

Submitted by tesla33 on April 27, 2016 - 3:49am

Hi,

apparently downloads of portable packages from Sourceforge are blocked by Google Chrome. I have tried to search the forum but haven't found anything definitive and/or recent in regard to this.

Simple question: Are portable apps hosted on Sourceforge a risk? Have they been modified by Sourceforge in any way?

Any clarification would be appreciated, thank you!
