According to Polish security researchers at Exatel, Maxthon Cloud currently engages in multiple spyware activities. An English translation of the report can be found here: https://exatel.pl/advisory/maxthonreporten.pdf

User ksdev on Hacker News summarizes it:

TL;DR: It doesn't matter if you agree to join "User Experience Improvement Program" in Maxthon or not - the browser regularly sends this data to Beijing servers:

OpenVPN installer fails

Submitted by softfoot on July 14, 2016 - 6:15am

I just tried to install the current .PAF. file and the install failed :-

"Unable to download file ......./binpack/current.txt (file not found 404)"

Other than this the install appears to work but when I try to run it I get the error :-

CreateProcess failed, exe='F:\PortableApps\OpenPNPortable\App\bin\openvpn.exe' cmdline='openvpn --version' dir='f:\PortableApps\OpenVPNPortable\App\bin'

I assume this is trying to install the 2.3.11 Win7 64 bit version.

This was all under XP. - However, I see the same install problem under Win7 Professional.

Delete Personal Information

Submitted by Mike.cornflake on July 5, 2016 - 9:04pm

Apologies - this question must have been asked often, but I just can't find an answer.

Are there any tools to remove all my personal information from a PortableApps USB key?

I work offshore, in areas of typically very poor internet connection. I'd like to give people a copy of my USB key - several find it very useful. I've experimented, and it appears that if I delete the entire Data subfolder, this seems to delete my personal information and resets each app to a prisitine, newly installed state. I'm not sure if this covers the whole story though...

Many thanks

Cache of Google Chrome Portable

Submitted by Loginonoff on July 5, 2016 - 3:23am

I use Google Chrome Portable (51.0.2704.106). I really like that by default, the cache files are saved to a temporary directory windows, because this directory I have moved to a RAM disk for Save SSD drive. But when I create a new virtual desktop in Windows 10 and run it another copy of Google Chrome Portable, I see that the new temporary files are not added to the Temp/GoogleChromePortable/Cache. So where are they added?

It has come to my attention that one of your Portable apps (uTorrent : https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/utorrent_portable) has a PUA file (Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA) is a term used to describe applications that, while not malicious, are generally considered unsuitable for business networks. The major PUA classifications are: adware. dialer. non-malicious .) PUA's are considered malicious by most anti viruses and get automatically deleted when installed making the app unusable..
