Need apps that are portable enough that I don't need admin rights

Submitted by spthomas on February 18, 2015 - 6:44pm

My need for portable apps is simple. I'm on different computers all the time, and most of them I do not have admin rights to. So a portable app does me no good unless it's REALLY portable, and doesn't try to write anything or need admin permissions.

Is that just not doable? Or if such exist, how do I know which ones don't require admin? The case in point is I just tried Revo uninstaller. It installed ok, but won't run at all without admin. I know, this is pretty deep stuff, but it's not the only so-called "portable" app I've had this problem with.

Error when updating app

Submitted by PortableGood on February 16, 2015 - 3:13pm

When using the PortableApps Platform to update FileZilla Portable, the Platform issues the following error message:

PortableApps.com Platform
The downloaded copy of FileZilla Portable is not valid and can not be
installed. This could be due to an incomplete download or other
network issue. Please try running the updater again when complete.

Running the updater again results in the same error message.

It would be nice if....
--The portable apps sweet ACTUALLY hijacked the host pc so as to assume a temporary identity as a portable pc app launcher.

--that while hovering over the checklist of apps that your trying to decide on downloading would show a window with all the pertain ate details and compatibility's this program itself has.

--I seen apps that had app installers and uninstallers in it. Would it not be prudent to include this into the program?

Network Connectivity Problems (Thunderbird, Firefox, Pidgin)

Submitted by randompacking on February 12, 2015 - 8:46am

I am a long time user of portableapps software, and this problem has boggled me for quite a while. Around December 2014, I started noticing network connectivity issues (not always consistent) with many of my portable apps:

Firefox - pages don't load sometimes. i get Content Encoding Error and Secure Connection Failed errors frequently.

Thunderbird - I use POP email for a few email addresses. Sometimes, when checking email, it shows that there are 1 out of x emails, but it only download a couple at a time. I have to re-send/receive to get all of them downloaded.

adding new app by duplicating DOSBoxPortable with custom autoexec

Submitted by PiRK on February 7, 2015 - 4:33am

Hi.

I'm trying to add a new launcher in Portable Apps. What I did is create a copy of the already installed PortableApps\DOSBoxPortable folder.
The new folder name is PortableApps\Lemmings, and inside that new folder I renamed DOSBoxPortable.exe into Lemmings.exe.
Then, I edited PortableApps\Lemmings\Data\settings\dosbox.conf to add :

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c \dos_apps
c:
c:\lemmings\vgalemmings

SIW Portable has been retired

Just a heads up that SIW Portable has been retired from the PortableApps.com App Store and won't be available in the platform's app store or updater. The publisher decided to cease making freeware personal versions available. The version we have from 2011 will still be available for direct download from our site for the time being but will not function on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10. It is no longer supported by the publisher or by PortableApps.com.
