Virus proof your USB drive???

Submitted by jason_reyes_10 on February 15, 2008 - 12:03am

Hi everybody!!! um,, this is my first post here so be gentle Smile
anyway um i was surfing the web one day and i stumbled upon an interesting topic. anyway from what i understood you could supposedly "virus proof" your usb drive by putting a read only and "undeletable?" copy of autorun.inf file in the root directory of your USB drive. the reason is so that the virus cant write its own copy of autorun.inf and start executing its files or whatever. anyway im a complete noob when it comes to computer stuff so if this post doesnt make sense the my bad Blum

Is my USB fast enough?

Submitted by dodmoor on February 14, 2008 - 12:30pm

Hi i am planning to buy a USB flash stick and wondered if the speeds were ok not just for portable apps but other stuff here are the specs

# Read Speed: 10.5MB/S (70X)
# Write speed: 7.24MB/s (48X)

It is quite cheap so i am planning to buy it ( $25 )

Thanks in advance Smile

Digital Signatures

Submitted by mstinaff on February 14, 2008 - 12:07pm

So now that Official apps are being signed, what is the best way to actually check these signatures? The only app I have found thus far is a command line tool from Microsoft called SigCheck. It gets the job done, but isn't exactly user friendly. So what have other people been using to check the signatures?

Created an interesting Autorun Program (Internet connection detection)

Submitted by BluePlanet on February 13, 2008 - 5:18pm

I created a autorun program, that only runs a specified application(s) when it detects an internet connection. I use my drive in a variety of places and not all of them have internet. I had set my Thunderbird and other apps to autorun, but got tired of them popping up even when I didn't have internet So I wrote a small program that detects a connection, and optionally asks you if you would like to start your applications, if there is no connection nothing happens.

Large Distribution Methods

Submitted by cturek on February 13, 2008 - 12:05pm

Is there a way to create an installation package for installing the portableapps software and a customized set of applications on 50-100 USB thumb drives? I would like to make this package available so users could easily run an installation and have it install the necessary mobile software into a portableapps format without having to selectively download and install the software. Also, is there a way to package updates for the different mobile application software as updates become available?

Truth in Advertising benchmark scores on USB flash drives

Submitted by EVBrown on February 13, 2008 - 9:17am

All,

I have read some posts regarding which drives are good for Portable apps, and I wanted to share my experience. I run most of my apps as portable apps on my USB drive, so everything will run exactly the same at work and at home. I even have some old legacy Windows apps that I run entirely from my USB drive. I had a 2 year old 2 GB Lexar Lightning drive that I was happy with, but I needed more space, so I researched which drives were supposed to be fast.
