I have just discovered this amazing PortableApps subject and it could well solve a problem for me. I have two PC's in my home office, plus a dedicated laptop that I use when visiting clients. (The home office runs on LAN.) I use a Seagate 5GB Pocket Drive to quickly move files between the PC's and the laptop, and sometimes to client's PC's. For several reasons, not the least of which is that my home PC's are on the dodgey side (I know, I am going to have to rebuild both of them, and soon!), it would be hugely convenient if I could run Outlook Express from the Pocket Drive.

I was wondering if there was a reason for all of the portable apps first downloading in a exe file. It's only purpose seems to unzip the files into a folder. It's not a big issue, but it would be good if you could just unzip it onto a stick in linux without using wine.

i had a folder called Documents on my flash with subfolders Music,Video and Pictures
the protableApps installer deleted all the contents of these folders, it just overwritten them.

"netstat -a 5 >netstat.out" tells me that FF Portable is connecting to server2.rareideas.com when it starts up. According to the www.rareideas.com site, RareIdeas apparently owns PortableApps.

Is this necessary? What, exactly, is it sending back to rareideas.com? Do the other PA programs do this too?

Hello. Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive, I had installed the Portable Apps Base and then through it, several portable applications, including Open Office Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan. However, some files and folders seemed to have became corrupted, and after trying unsuccessfully to get rid of un-openable files with special symbols that appeared out of nowhere, I formated the drive.

I'd like to know if PortableApps is alive since last software update was made in August.

I am running Firefox Portable v. 2.0.0.7

I look at many web sites that contain a lot of banner ads,
which takes longer to download on my dial up connection,
is there any thing I can do to get FF, to download the web page with out
all the advertising banners, and hopefully load quicker..?

This may be just on my computer, but when I look at the main website, portablapps.com, at the bottom of the main image, that part of the bottom of the image, where it starts to be a reflection of the menu, and the "As Seen..." I sometimes don't see the reflection, and sometimes the whole bit w/ the "As Seen" and below doesn't show up. Other times , it does. Just wondering if anyone else has this.

Probabaly for most known, but I am a rather newbie to this portable experimenting.

Now trying to set some things like pgp and gpg to work on the stick. They mostly use either some directions for directorires from windows or sometimes a fixed path is OK (like older pgp)
But the stick does no know its root path in advance.

What do I have to enter in possible bat or similar set up file to point the software to its ususal directories if it is no able to search for all in its own dir by defoult?

I've encountered some installer who ask the user for an install location. This might seem a little weird. I't probably possible for the installer to correctly determine where the portable apps need to be installed. (probaby by finding the portable apps menu).

In case of an additional PAM copy on HDD they mostly are in a subfolder I would imagine. On USB Flash Drives they probably in the root.

Maybe these installers I've seen had some older install app or something.
