Perfect Portable Enviroment

Well, almost perfect...

I'm using some applications that make my Portable Experience more streamlined. Some applications that are not necessarily are needed for PAM but make it more useful. Most if not all have been discussed in this forum and can be found here. Although it makes me wish I could have them more integrated into the PAM itself...

The user plugs in the Portable drive...

Wikipedia Help

Hey all,

Recently I have been taking a look at the PortableApps.com Wikipedia pages and starting to clean them up a bit. However I have run out of time recently and more still needs to be done to keep them decent, here's a list of stuff that I think needs to be done and I would be much obliged if someone (or many people) could sort some of them out.

  1. Cleanup of the lists on the PortableApps.com page.
  2. Rewriting some of the sections on that page to make sure that they are from a neutral pov.

Hide system tray icons

Submitted by mckayc on March 5, 2008 - 1:43pm

I have searched the forums but did not find anything on this. I use A-Suite and have it set to start up a bunch of programs (mostly desktop enhancements) but they are all minimized to the system tray. I was wondering if any one knows of a app that can be used portably to hide these icons.

Ideas for the perfect menu

Submitted by mckayc on March 5, 2008 - 1:24pm

I have lately been reading and trying a bunch of different menus such as A-Suite, geek.menu and modifications on PAM (Portable Apps Menu). I find good things with all of these menus, but still have not seemed to find the perfect menu that fits ALL my needs. I was wondering what other people think are the most important features of "The Perfect Menu." I am interested in what other people like for functionality and imagine this kind of information would be useful for developers as well.

I will start with things that I think are most important:

Fixed Drive Letter The Ultimate Solution

i cooked up a launcher which allows you to have a fixed drive letter
it uses a third party program called ReMount

get it from here
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/remount.zip
create a folder named Data in the Launcher's Directory
place ReMount.exe in the Data Directory
and run the Launcher
which can be found here
http://rapidshare.com/files/97220106/ReMount.zip.html

this by default mounts the current drive letter to W:

the advantage of this method is that you only have one drive in My Computer

Registry Not Being Deleted

; insert regkeys to use separated by "||", comment out, when not used,
; e.g. HKCU\Software
!define REGKEYS ""
; If a file "Registry.reg" within the data directory is found then it is read
; and all child registry keys are processed as if they'd have been set within
; REGKEYS

I put the the registry in the data folder and it adds the registry but its not being deleted.then later in the script there is this to delete the registry
; Delete actual actual registry key (with portable content)

Business packaging

I'm from a company interested in including portable 7zip in our IT training material. Our training material is distributed as printed books and one or more DVDs containing a compressed VMware image. I'd like to be able to include 7zip on the first disk to decompress the VMware image.

Are there any licensing considerations here? We're not interested in modifying the application in any way, merely saving the end-user a download.

Thanks!!!!!

Launchers & Installers

Anyone who uses the Launcher and Installer to create their own versions or adaptions finds himself besides the usual adaption, entering similar information several times.

For example, both Launcher and Installer need AppName, PortableName, ExecutableName etc.

Suggestion:

Having an AppInfo.nsh that is included in both the Launcher and Setup that contains the AppName, AppVersion and AppShortName etc. Then this is being included into the launcher and setup, using one file. Less work to update or change and less chance of typos Smile

I've been busy the past week and I'd just like to note what has happened and make a few generic comments. If I've missed anything you think I should know, let me know here.

Translation Team
I've noticed we now have an official beta testing team. As Patrick would say (while driving up in pimped out mini-van), w00t w00t! Blum
Along these lines, I think we need an official translation team. (Hold your thoughts until I finish)
