Buying a New Flash Drive

Submitted by dhartsoc on August 4, 2010 - 10:43am

I am trying to find a fast flash drive in the 8 to 16Gb range without spending more than $60. 8Gb has proven adequate for my needs.

Currently I use an 8Gb Sandisk Cruzer Micro. Love that it is retractable and reliable... but it is s-l-o-w. It can take 5 or 6 seconds after I click in an application for a response.
Furthermore I suspect it is wearing out. When I ran some speed tests recently the write speeds were in the 6 to 7MB per second range until late in the test, when they dropped down to 0.1 to 0.3Mb per second. That made the average write speed drop to the 3MB per second range.

Lunascape 6

Is anyone familiar with a web browser called Lunascape 6? When I was searching for other web browsers other than Mozilla Firefox, I stumbled upon this. Lunascape is a web browser that can switch between three different rendering engines, Gecko (from Mozilla Firefox), Trident (from IE), and Webkit (Apple Safari and perhaps Google Chrome). Lunascape works great with the Gecko engine, and it seems to (try to) emulate everything about my Firefox setup, themes and all, because it transfers the setup (bookmarks, plugins, and Gecko) from Firefox.

Maxthon Browser

Has anyone tried this browser. Looking at their overview page, it looks really nice. A friend asked about it. and asked for my recommendation, but as I am unable to install & try it out right now, I thought I'd see if anyone one else has any experience with it.

Windows 7 Portable

Thank you for all the great work you do in bringing us portable apps for Windows. I like to use these on my notebook PC knowing that I have one less app using the Windows GFR (God Forsaken Registry).

I have one request. Is it possible to give us a portable version of Windows XP or 7, one that doesn’t use the GFR. Oh wait, I remember now….its called Linux.

Thanks again! Smile

Chrome vs. Firefox

I've decided that I've gotten too used to and too spoiled by Firefox, so I'm gonna test Chrome and Opera for about a week each. I feel like I used to be savvy with both IE and Netscape back in the day, but after Netscape started to go downhill, I switched to IE, and stayed there until Firefox, around 0.9.3 I believe, and I've been with Firefox ever since, and my skill with other browsers has dropped to about nil.

How Your antivirus package treats PA.com apps?

Submitted by shanet on July 10, 2010 - 7:34am

Hi everybody...
I am wondering what antivirus everyone uses. I would like to know:

1. What antivirus you have (please put the title in 'strong', with database definition version if known),
2. How it treats PortableApps.com applications, and
3. What YOU think of your antivirus.

My answer to this would be:

    AVG Internet Security 9.0.839
    Database: 271.1.1/2993 (update today - 10/July/2010)

AVG Internet security treats portableapps.com well. I have not had a single
false positive with AVG Internet security yet.

[Vista/7] Would you like to scan and fix your drive?

Every single time you insert it in a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer? Every time? Really? Even a brand-new drive, never been used, even when you've used the Safely Eject Hardware feature, or an equivalent Eject script (like the one in the PortableApps platform)?

Clearly this "feature" was meant to be something special, but ended up dead on arrival, basically asking you if you want to scan every single removable disk you insert, trying to frighten you with tales of damage that realistically have no basis in fact.

(Does this work how it's supposed to for anybody?)

Settings for Flash Drive

Submitted by patrick013 on July 2, 2010 - 12:29pm

Hello, this isn't software related but is certainly affecting my computer usage.
A flash drive has a fresh format, chkdsk shows no errors, so it should work OK and does until I take it to the school library computer and use it to save work files, download programs at high speed (8 mps) to the flash drive, etc.. Right now it is telling me the drive is unreadable and corrupted. I tried rebooting the school library computer to get a fresh boot but that didn't help. Other people here say their flash drives are working OK and the computer room people haven't a clue either.
