U3 or Not

Submitted by romeroom on November 21, 2006 - 10:26am

I would appreciate some help in making a decision about portable hardware. I've been using a regular USB flash drive with many of the applications listed on this site.

I have an opportunity to purchase a U3 drive. As informed as I usually am about these things, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Please bear with my ignorance and try to address the following questions:

1. Will I be able to use non-U3 applications on a U3 drive?
2. What are the real benefits of a U3?
3. Are U3 drives faster or slower than regular USB flash drives?
4. Are U3 drives the "wave of the future" and thus non-U3 applications will stop being developed?

No network connectivity from apps on Truecrypt volume?

Submitted by evilcartman on November 21, 2006 - 1:56am

I just installed the PortableApps Standard suite on a Truecrypt volume that I keep on a USB thumb drive. Previously, I had installed and successfully used portable apps from this Truecrypt volume. After installing the suite and moving my other apps (e.g., portaputty, Torpark, etc.) into the PortableApps directory on this volume, I get NO network connectivity from any of the apps, either the ones in the suite or others. Network connectivity works fine from apps installed on the hard drive of the PC I'm connected, so that isn't the problem. As I said, portable apps used to work fine from this Truecrypt volume, so I'm really puzzled.

PortableApps.com Monthly Newsletter?

Submitted by Nick on November 21, 2006 - 12:52am

I don't know if this has been discussed yet, I tried searching and got an error "Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator."

Anywho, has there ever been a PortableApps.com Monthly Newsletter? I subscribed to it a long time ago (obviously), and have not seen a single newsletter in my email. Has anyone gotten one?

Global Disabling Of Splash Screens

Submitted by Carraway on November 20, 2006 - 6:50pm

I searched briefly on this topic and found nothing.

Whenever I install a portable app from this site, the first thing I always do is edit the INI file and disable the splash screen. This has gotten tedious after having used these apps for nearly a year, and having installed them over and over on various computers.

zip files no longer available for download

Submitted by rob.vdb@telenet.be on November 20, 2006 - 3:50pm

Hi,
I was just wondering if it still would be possible to have a zipped version of the portable applications available for Downloading.

I post this question because I'm a big fan of portable applications, and I created myself a small programm (downloading +launching).
I also have a website on the program. http://users.telenet.be/Robvdb/PortOffExec.htm

I also used to have some portable applications from this site; such as Portable Firefox, Portable Thunderbird, Portable AbiWord and OpenOffice.org Portable.

But I noticed today that the zip files are no longer available for downloading. Instead the download files are now xxxxx.paf.exe
