Portable Apps Convert

Submitted by AndySmith on December 10, 2006 - 11:17am

It's only been a couple of days since I loaded up my 1Gb LG USB thingy with Portable Apps. It's brilliant, so many thanks to all concerned.
That's not to say things are 100%. I've a couple of issues with macro loaded Excel files which needed a lot of reformatting, and I can't (yet) get TBird to send any emails, but so far I'm mightily impressed.

I've even added a number of other apps to the Portable Apps menu.
-Skype Portable (just ordinary Skype with a portable launcher)
-Chess (a freestanding little prog from seti)
-FreeShip ( a brilliant 3D draughting programme for amateur yacht designers)

U3 v PortableApps

Submitted by Throg on December 10, 2006 - 6:44am

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I've had a quick scan around and couldn't find anything.

I've been using U3 for quite a while now and although I like the functionality, some things about it bug me - specifically how locked-down and proprietry the software is and how closely it's tied to the hardware. The latter is a particular concern because the U3 installation on my second memory stick, a Disgo, failed after a couple of weeks' usage, which as I understand it is a common problem.

I am therefore seriously considering switching to using PortableApps instead, especially as the main U3 apps I use (FF, TB and OO) are all supplied by PortableApps anyway.

Forum Guidelines Updated - Clarification on Signature Links: Personal Sites Only

An issue has been cropping up quite a bit lately with people posting links in signatures. Some people have been posting blatantly commercial sites or attempting to self-promote their own community sites. I've been pretty lenient in the past around only correcting people via a direct email message rather than calling them out in the forums... and then only if it's an obviously commercial site or an attempt to create a community site exactly like this one. Or only correcting issues when people email me directly to complain.

Clean Installs and Portable Apps

Submitted by markstrelecki on December 8, 2006 - 1:21pm

I just joined this forum and wanted to express my thanks for a wonderful idea (portable apps) and an even better implementation.

I have worked in technology since 1975 and over the years I discovered how important it is to be able to do a clean install on my Windows PCs to rejuvenate their performance and restore them to "better-than-new" condition.

Because hardware and driver technology moves so rapidly, as does software, I needed a way to leverage that change and make it work to the advantage of myself, friends, family and clients. My "bare metal clean install" is that way, and it's worked for me for at least fifteen years, perhaps longer.

PortableApps Not working in XP

Submitted by C3nz0 on December 7, 2006 - 11:29pm

Hi all,

I've using Ceedo and then someone pointed me out to "PortableAPPS" and from all the reading and screenshots etc... It looks and sounds great! But I've downloaded it and cannot for the life of me install it!
I've tried three different USB Sticks brand and non-brand. On two of them the install completes but the app does not run! With the following Error message:- "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:057a: IP:0100 OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate application."
On the other the installation freezes on 43% for ever!

I've tried copying the patch on top but still nothing.

Can't get to work on Windows 2000 Professional

Submitted by cstern on December 7, 2006 - 7:57am

I get the following error message listed below:

"The exception unknown software exception (0x0eefade) occurred in the application of locateion 0x7c59b3f."

Also, get this error message:

“Exception EOSError in module PortableAppsMenu.exe at 0000DA65.
System Error. Code 87.
The parameter is incorrect.”

Please advise further how to resolve this issue.
