Making an application portable

Submitted by jessejazza on December 17, 2006 - 3:52am

Dear members

I have read with interest how some have turned Skype and other applications portable. I'd be grateful if someone could explain why applications were written so that they impacted the registry when as we see with Portable Apps they could have written settings to the directory. It does seem to me that a lot of applications don't need to impact the registry so why were they written like this in the first place.

So what does one need to do to make an application portable or isn't it that easy. I have a copy of eMindMaps which i'd like to make portable. Later programs like Freemind, ThinkGraph are not as good, and the later MindManager far too complicated and less intuitive than eMindMaps.

Password protecting USB drive?

Submitted by Day on December 15, 2006 - 5:15pm

I have a USB drive with U3 on it and the U3 software has a function to protect the drive with a password however on some computers (running WinXP or Win2000)usually the ones connected to a network the drive does not work as the window asking for the password does not show up. Is there a different program that can be used to protect the whole USB drive and works without a hitch?

Best Portable Software for Library Usage?

Submitted by tmbstone on December 15, 2006 - 3:32am

I currently visit my local library on a fairly regular basis and was curious what software you would recommend? Im going to use Portable Firefox, but thats about the extent of my knowledge. Im thinking I might need a proxy as fantasy sports sites seemed to be blocked. Do I need some sort of spyware/antivirus? Any software that may remove any cookies/temp files? All help is greatly appreciated.

Here's my idea:
I'm going to try and create an extension that will try and find the following:
x new
And then create a nsIAlert saying if a post was found.
Anyone want to help me since I know almost nil about extension developing?

Portable Apps Suite Icons

Submitted by Thomas.Humphries on December 14, 2006 - 8:24am

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to have bigger icons for the suite.
I would like just icons or at least a 128x128 icon.

I am aware that this would make the app look awful but if it was JUST icond and had them 3 in a row I thik this would look nice.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Thom.
