Corruption loves me, doesn't it?

How do I make sure that files don't become corrupted? Some Fx cache files and a few other random files were corrupted. I ran chkdsk, and that seemed to fix everything, but it's probably because I caught it before it became severe. And because the drive's FS is NTFS. I know there are problems when the drive inserted properly, but I make sure it fits. *sigh*

Status Update (July 21): Power, New Releases and an Injury

I figured I'd drop another status update in as it has been a few days. The power problems continue throughout my area of New York City. I started getting mostly usable power yesterday. About 100 volts with occasional dips. Enough so I can run off my UPS with a voltage regulator and get a solid 120 to my PC. But not enough to use my desktop and AC at the same time. It's been 5 days and it's now hitting the front page of CNN and The NY Times. ConEd is estimating 25,000 "customers" in my area. Of course, my 16-unit apartment building is considered a single customer... so estimates are at least 100,000 people affected.

Turning off Portable Applications Splash Screens

Submitted by CreativeNRG on July 20, 2006 - 2:14am

I have an autostart file in the root of my portable drive which runs pstart on startup. Pstart in turn starts up my portable thunderbird, Pass2Go and FireFox, can you tell me if it is possible to disable the splash screens in the portable applications on this site? Is there a setting that can be simply changed to disable this.

Thanks, Simon

What are your expierence with this stick?

Submitted by Dorncholatre on July 19, 2006 - 6:48pm

Hi everyone
I bought a Extrememory U3 USB 2.0 Smart-Drive with 1024 MB a few days ago.
Has anyone bad (or hopefully good) experience with this type of stick, perhaps with a former version ?

How relyable are sticks of this manufacturer?
I couldn't find a test of extact this stick, but of others of this manufacturer (which were not at... the top of the list).
I hope, this one will be not as some others.
I bought it 'cause of the low price, the ability to set a password and the other promised features.

Running Encryption apps from a USB drive problem

Submitted by PhatSOB on July 19, 2006 - 5:42pm

I recently ent away for a few days and brought with me my OCZ Rally USB drive with everything I could need on it encrypted on a portion of the drive. I left the encryption software unencrypted of course so that I could run it and access the software I had protected. When I got to my hotel and tried using a PC in their business center I could access the drive but not run the encyption software(TrueCrypt) because it required a driver to be installed. The PC did not allow drivers to be installed without admin access. So that leads to my question, how can I run this software on a public PC that will not allow me to install the necessary driver?

Hello Group;

I have been useing a item called "A43". It is a portable file manage with a ziper built into it. It works fine and leaves no registry entries. The latest version works on Win2KP, and Win XP.

It may work on older OS's but is notr tested on them. You may be able to download earlier version. Do a web search for it "A43"

Submitted by alpha752 on July 18, 2006 - 6:26pm

Please forigve my ignorance, but I was wondering if there was a portable app that would allow me to sync my outlook mail from work onto the USB. We use outlook at work, and I would like to sync all my mail onto my USB for storage and archiving. Is there such a program?

Thanks

Portable Firefox and Thunderbird Release Delay (Updated: Wed July 19)

Just wanted to drop a note regarding the delay. Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird were going to be released this morning at 8am NY time. But Con Ed, the power company in NYC, has been supplying power with an 8% reduction in voltage (read: sub-standard voltage that doesn't play well with electronics) to portions of the city for the past 14 hours. As such, I am unable to bring my primary development systems or UPSes online. I've got my laptop setup as a backup and my internet is intermittent (which is how I'm posting this). There's no ETA on when usable power will be restored to the affected areas. I'll post more when I can.
