I recently started using a cheap 128mb USB drive I got for Christmas last year..

AFter using it to just transfer pics from one PC to another.. I got addicted to trying to keep all of my handy programs on it.

Now, it's just not big enough..

If any of you could recommend good quality USB Drives, I'd appreciate it.

I have been looking at the Lexar models: Lightning and Secure II

Either a 1 or 2 gig would be plenty for me.. (for now)

When will the remaining apps be renamed? I use Portable Gimp and Portable OOo2 all the time. When the names are changed will I have to completely reinstall and lose any settings? Thanks.

Was just wondering if any of you remember hearing about a device that when plugged into a machine's USB port would take over said computer and boot into its own operating system complete with all necessary applications and workspace. I think I came across it on Tom's HG but I can't seem to find it.

It seems like such a device would really benefit a lot of the people on this forum. Maybe the cost was prohibitive or something and hence it doesn't get talked about much, if ever. It's even hard to know what to search for to find such a thing.

The reason behind this is to have a portable work environment complete with every application needed for work, not just the apps that are portable ATM. That way you could have a virtual machine of sorts in your pocket (or backpack, if it's big hdd), and just plug it into some host computer and take over their CPU, memory, and other resources.

Do any of the programs at The Portable Freeware Collection write to the drive heavily?

I have an email that I can see when I use TBP but when I use the full TB on my desk top computer the email isn't there. When I log onto the cox.net website and log in to my mail it is not there either. Is it stuck in my portable because it first was seen with that program?

I wanted to get some general thoughts on a directory structure for data for use with the portable apps. I'm planning on building in some support for a default data structure to all the apps. You'll be able to change it with an INI, of course, but if you use the defaults, it'll just work. And the next release of the suite will include this directory setup by default.

I had been planning on a directory layout that was patterned after Windows XP, so users would be familiar with it (albeit without the silly "My" business):

/(root)
  /Documents
    /Music
    /Pictures
    /Videos

I really like Firefox (especially the portable version). But the integrated Downloadmanager is awful (I am sure you know what I am talking about).

I already tried DownThemAll, but I think it is not possible to manage it as the standard Downloader. You always have to right-click on the file and choose DTA.

Flashgot is also a nice extension, but useless for portable FF. Because you have to install an external Downloadmanager(which is not portable).

Download Manager Tweak sometimes makes problems downloading more than 1 file at the same time.

DTA would be the perfect downloadmanager if it could be really integrated in FF as the standard downloader.

I suppose this is one of those forms of self-promotion, but I'm simply announcing that I have worked on a portable launcher for 7zip and for Gaim v2b3, and they are available for download at http://pfeerick86.googlepages.com/7zportable and http://pfeerick86.googlepages.com/gaimportable.

Full source code is available, and the launchers are based on the latest FirefoxPortable Launcher, so they should fully support running from CDs, etc. Don't know about linux/unix compatability via wine.

I'm not going to be on the forums for a while. I've been debating this for a while now, and I decided it's finally time I did it.

You see, I'm working on two games right now, one being an RPG, so I need all the time I can get to get anything worthwhile done on them. I spend most of my Internet time on the PortableApps.com forums, so I figure if I take a break for a while, I'll free up a lot of time for my own projects.

I have a different concept of generating portable apps. I create the environment needed for a software virtually and not static on the PC. So my portablisation works on all software without any modification and is it leaving no traces on the computer.

I have written a freeware/donationware programsuite based on on that concept that generates portableapps on any software you can find. Combined with the nice menu its all what i need to survive.

(Actually the current version needs the .Net Framework 2.0, but i am working on that fact)

I am not saying that this method is better than programming good software or making a modification but my method is the only way to use closed source software, too. So Guys keep on your good work and for "any digital life (nearly) anywhere" use my software
