Using portable application on you HD.

Submitted by albator on December 13, 2005 - 6:24pm

Why I use portable applications on my HD:

They are permanent and stable. Indeed If I reinstall windows xp, All my program will be ready to use, I will not have to lose time to reinstall all my favorites applications. Since the settins are stored to a local directory, I never have to reconfigure preferences and options. Indeed xml or ini configuration are remanent.

They are small and effecient. I can install them on my other HD. My c: drive including windows and program files is only taking 550 meg of space. This allow my pc to have extreme perfomance. Portable application are the tweaker companions, because they allow you to futher speed up your pc.

Autorun USB

Does anyone know if it is possible to configure a flash drive, or any usb device, as a non-removable drive? I would like to enable autorun on my flash drive, and so far, I have not been able to find solid information about it.

PFF affiliates button?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on December 13, 2005 - 3:08pm

Consider making a portable FireFox button like those on the FireFox affiliates homepage? http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates/homepage People could copy the html and easily link to your site. After looking at one of these blank buttons I imagined one that looked a little more like a usb stick that said Portable FireFox on it - Just a thought. By the way - you need a "this site is best viewed in FireFox 1.5" disclaimer.

KeePass - password safe to go!

Submitted by cde on December 12, 2005 - 10:14am

I use KeePass at home and away for password security, combine that with TrueCrypt and you have very few worries for data exposure.

Is this site covering already portable (non-installing) apps, or just portable-ified versions of other apps?

Whichever, even if it's not listed here, I'd recommend KP for the forgetful and the paranoid...

Shortcut

Submitted by Kyrubas on December 12, 2005 - 8:24am

Call it lazy or what ever, but is there a way I could short cut the apps to the root directory of my USB drive so that no matter what drive letter the drive is named as the shortcut will still be valid? Right now for FireFox I have the short cut as E:/.../.../PortableFireFox.exe, but if I go to another computer with a differe number of drives, it could be named F: or G: and then I have to click 3 more times to get to it; I supose it's more of a 'can it be done' because the few extra clicks aren't realy a bother.

Individual Launchers

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on December 10, 2005 - 8:10pm

This is great! Your old site has been updated! Hope this one gets more atention.

I have one request though: Could you release the launcher alone (for us to download the launcher and use it with our language version)?

I am portuguese and therefore would like some apps (such as Open Office in my language). If I recall correctly we needed to use PEcompact to make the app smaller.

Could you please make a tutorial to help us, non-english native speakers to get the apps running in our language from a mobile media drive.

By the way, great project
