Gedcom reader - genealogy data

Submitted by richardcallanan on August 3, 2007 - 5:27pm

Gedcom is an industry standard file format for all the data we geeks keep on our ancestors. All the main commercial genealogy programs can create gedcom files. There are several free-standing gedcom reader programs available but I can find none that are portable. It would be so neat not to have to take my laptop on every research trip!

Scanner

Found nice little app that i believe is standalone, free, and has the open source codes.
Its called scanner and it displays the usage of your drives. Cames in pretty handy sometimes, when i have to fix some pcs and show ppl that there mp3s or video files are taking up way to much of there disk space. Its easier to show them in a pie chart form then in the Gigabytes that they dont understand.

I Just Got A 1GB U3 Flash Drive And I Love It.
But There Is Still Some App's On The Site, That U3 Doesnt Have. I No Its Wierd Having Two Menus (One For U3 And One For PortableApps.com) But I Still Love PortableApps Better.

Is There Anyway, John, Or Someone, Can Create A U3 Version Of The PortableApps Menu?

I Understand That The Design (Where The Folders Are And All That) Has To Change A Bit.

Like
DRIVELETTER:\System(Where The U3 Apps Are Stored [HIDDEN FOLDER])\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.u3p

If U Have A U3 Drive Find A U3P File And Extract It Using 7-Zip.

ReducePhotoSize 1.3

It's a very simplistic program that shrinks the size of .jpg files.

Could be useful for people wanting to email pictures (now more then ever with 5mp and higher cameras becoming common). Could also be bennifical for web developers wanting to shrink the size of .jpg

can be found at http://www.jdmcox.com/ and is listed in other apps.

The source code is also found on the page, but it doesn't state one way or the other if it's open source.

MediaInfo

I came across this open source app that can pull media information from media files. It appears to handle both audio & video. I've copy from their website some of the information that it gets from files, and some of the media files the app supports:

What information can I get from MediaInfo?

* General: title, author, director, album, track number, date, duration...
* Video: codec, aspect, fps, bitrate...
* Audio: codec, sample rate, channels, language, bitrate...
* Text: language of subtitle
* Chapters: number of chapters, list of chapters
