Portable Offline Internet Browser

Submitted by Matthew9 on April 26, 2007 - 4:41pm

Sounds strange doesn't it, hehe. Being a student who doesn't have internet at home, it would be extremely useful if there was a portable web browser (or plugin; to Firefox of course) that was able to save websites in a cache on your USB so you could browse the sites later.

I had this in mind because I have discussion boards for some of my online classes, but I often don't have time to read them until later at night when the school is closed.

I am looking for a portable apps "contact and appointment"-manager.
It should import contacts from MS-Outlook.

An U3-solutuion is "Essential PIM", but that's not a portable apps for an USB-thumb-drive.

Any ideas???

secure file delete

Submitted by spoonyfork on April 25, 2007 - 9:40am

I looked through the forums and searched the site but could not find any obvious mention of a secure file delete portable app. If it hasn't already been requested or isn't currently in development I would like to formally request it. If it has been requested or is in development then I would like to voice my support for this effort.

I have been using Simple File Shredder by scar5 software on my USB flash drive but I am not married to it. I do not know if it is 100% portable but it works for my purposes.

SoftMaker - Word and Excel Compatible - Already Portable!

Submitted by mrsean2k on April 25, 2007 - 6:15am

Just to say that I'm a satisfied user of TextMaker (WP) and PlanMaker (Spreadsheet) from Softmaker.

These are non-free, but inexpensive (69 USD or 69 EUR for both apps on WIN32 AND Linux), and IMO excellent.

They are relatively small (about 35Mb for both), and already portable with a simple installation routine described here:

No financial link, just a satisfied user. Well worth paying for.

freecap - open source programm to force programms to use socks proxy and to resolve dns remotely

Submitted by guestt on April 24, 2007 - 8:55pm

Program: freecap

License: Open Source/GPL

Website: http://www.freecap.ru/eng/

Other: It`s almost portable, just the settings are not saved.

Description: This program can force *any* program (which doesn`t support to use socks proxy including dns request) from "outside" to use a socks proxy. Dns can be resolved remotely. It can be used as a app launcher awell. Worth a look imho, guess it`s not that complicated.
