gvim will "work" from a removable media, but the problem is that any settings saved to your .vimrc or .gvimrc are not saved because of where gvim tries to access the rc files. A portable version of gvim would be incredibly handy.

Personaly, I'm thrilled about Notepad 2. It's a small textediter like Notepad, but with MUCH more functionality built in without weighing it down much. It's a great IDE for a number of languages (just got to run it through a compiler/assembler), and it has a bunch of other cool functions too!

Being a Java executable, I should think that JSword (http://crosswire.org/jsword/) should be relatively easy to make into a Portable App. Unlike other Java Executable apps that I use (see thread titled "Portable Java Apps"), this one doesn't simply launch upon double-click. I'm still researching this issue...

What we need next is a utility the can intercept, at the system level, the system check for associated program calls and redirect it to the relavent portable apps.
Then portable really will be portable even to linking between applications.

I know a batch or script can be used that will log the existing FTYPE associations in windows and replace them the with the current portable locations the restore them later.

i.e.
C:\Program Files\Support Tools>ftype http >> CurrentSetting.txt
C:\Program Files\Support Tools>ftype https >> CurrentSetting.txt
would yield a file with:
http=C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE -url "%1"

For a game, Cube is a great open source doom clone. Bit big though, probably for ipods.

OperaUSB is already out (and ten megabytes smaller than firefox...), I'm not sure if this site will ever collaberate with that, but it is pretty cool, just not easy to find.

Just thought I would let everyone know about a little-known podcatcher that can be run from your usb-mp3 player. It downloads your podcasts straight to your drive, so if you don't have broadband at home like me, and have network restrictions like me, you can still use the office\school connection to download your podcasts. I think it would be great if it were listed on this site. The address is below.

I don't know if this is possible since I am not a programmer, but I have thought for a long time that it would be great if someone would develop an OS that runs from a flash drive. What I would like to see is a platform that would possibly autorun when the drive is plugged in and list the portable apps located on the drive in a virtual "Desktop". I know the U3 launchpad drives have been released, but I don't own one, and I think it would be great to have an alternative. Besides, from what I understand, you are required to purchase much of the portable software, and many free applications are not compatible with it yet.

I noticed no links under the image viewers and would like to make a suggestion for a link to a free image viewer application that is already portable. You should drop those guys a line and see if they mind you linking to their page.

The application is very well written and can do limited image manipulation. Far better than Irfanview in my opinion. (No, I don't work for xnview, just glad to see such a beautiful peice of work made available to all).

Both are open source and frequently usedSo it would be easy to make a portable version, right? 

I think you should make Quintessential portable because it is pretty small and requires hardly any CPU so it would be fairly easy to make portable.
