Alternative to google toolbar?

Submitted by dtms1 on April 12, 2011 - 8:17pm

So im using firefox portable and im loving it, however I need the google toolbar but when i use that addon it slows down FFportable A LOT. Everytime a new page or tab opens it pauses for a few seconds and then continues.

Is there an alternative to the google toobar where i can search for stuff on google without going to google itself?
The toolbar that came with firefox portable is alredy being used and I need another one (preferably on the left side like the google toolbar)

Any ideas on what else i can do or maybe some settings on google toolbar to fix it?

Plugins will not show and Adobe Flash Player isn't found

I recently installed Firefox Portable 4.0 to a network share. When it starts up, everything is fine for a while. After a random amount of time, not only does Adobe Flash Player (which I installed per the instructions on this site) fail, but when I try to look at plugins, none show up. I know the network share is sound - I manage it. As far as I know, there are no disconnects from it, even momentarily. After restarting Firefox Portable, it works again for a while. I have rebooted my system repeatedly and that does not help.

Removing the menu bar/using with server2go

Hi,

Firstly, I just had to do a bit of hacky stuff to register here: The captcha wasn't displaying, so I looked in the page source, and brought up what it was trying but failing to display (in my case https://api-secure.recaptcha.net/noscript?k=biglonghash) and opened that on it's own. Looks like the certificate has expired over on that site, so you'll probably want to get them to change the date on it, or get a new one. Most browsers are particularly suspicious of expired certs, so the process for getting the captcha to display will put some users off Smile

Tip: Remove toolbar clutter with userChrome.css hacks you can do

About five years ago, Lifehacker published an article about how to remove a lot of clutter from the toolbars of Firefox 2.something (one commenter asked about doing it in Firefox 3 beta 4). Much of it is outdated, but some of the hacks still work and are very much worth doing, especially if you use Portable Firefox on small(er) screens. (This works for regular, locally-installed Firefox as well, it just requires the extra step of locating your profile.)

Add-ons losing updates between computers

Submitted by srob030869 on April 7, 2011 - 1:59am

I run Portable Firefox on 3 PC's and sync the Profile directories between them.

Each time, just after a sync, I start up firefox it has lost any Add-on updates that have been applied since I changed to 4 from 3.6. If I then update Add-ons and restart then everything is fine until I swap to another PC and the same happens again.

Has anyone got any ideas where to look?

On all 3 PC's the install directory of the Portable Apps are the same

Backing up a Firefox Portable 4.0 Profile

Hello:

I use Firefox 3.6.16 on my HDD as well as Firefox Portable 4.0 via a USB Flash Drive on the same PC.

If I see that Firefox Portable 4.0 works fine after customizing it, I'd like to install Firefox Portable to my HDD, possibly after uninstalling Firefox 3.6.16 which is now installed there.

Question:

Firefox4 not picking up portable Plugins directory

Submitted by Also on April 5, 2011 - 6:00am

During Firefox4Beta and Firefox3.6 I had no problems with saving plugins in to either one of the two plugin directories which travel with the portable app.
This of course being important for Flash and Shockwave use.
(Details on how to do this can be found elsewhere on these forums, that's not the purpose of this post-> carry on hunting sorry!)

I'm also aware of the about:config switch to turn OFF scanning for local plugins (plugin.scan.plid.all switched to false does this if you don't want to use local plugins).

I've got the opposite problem.
