[Fixed] Compatibility updates don't travel with Firefox Portable

Submitted by Kernel on March 26, 2011 - 10:39am

If I have an extension whose original XPI was not compatible with the current version of Firefox, but for whom there is a compatibility update available, this works just fine for the installed version of Firefox.

But for Firefox Portable, whenever I use it on a new machine, it seems that the compatibility update didn't travel with it, and I need to update extensions all over again.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

Hey kids,

So I recently installed firefox portable to my Ironkey and I wanted to install shockwave, So I looked around and saw an instructions on how to do so.

I downloaded the latest shockwave player from the site, clicked run but it didn't let me choose where to install it, but it says on the instructions to install on X:/FirefoxPortable/Apps/firefox

So If anyone knows how I can solve this problem please tell me!

ThankYou,

updating to 3.6.16 from 3.6.15

yes, I know, I should be going to 4.0 but there are a couple of add-ons I can't do without that don't work under 4.0 yet - so I'm sticking with 3.6.xx for the moment.

now, I know I can update to 3.6.16 by going Help > Check for Updates, but should I wait until a PortableApps version is released instead?

From memory, these days it should be ok to let Firefox update to 3.6.16, but I just wanted to be sure (and maybe wait a couple of extra days if a PortableApps release is around the corner?)

Win 7 taskbar problem fixed

Submitted by scoobford on March 21, 2011 - 3:10pm

If you have Win 7, and you pin the launcher .exe file to the taskbar, and use it, it shows a seperate icon for the actual window. If you pin THAT to the taskbar it stores the settings on the default location(bad). Up until now the only way to avoid this is to do a complex appid hack, but I have found an easier mcguyver solution.
1. get portable app(in this case FF beta portable)
2. pin the 2nd (running window) icon to the taskbar only.
3. use that, but if you are getting an addon or theme, use the portable launcher.exe to keep your settings on the usb

Install full firefox or portable firefox on a new computer?

Submitted by jawkiwi on March 17, 2011 - 4:48pm

I have searched before doing this post, but if there is a link to my answer then I will be glad to know of it

I have just purchased a new laptop/new book.... HP dm1z and am setting it up. Someone has advised that it is better to install portable app as opposed to full applications as they can be removed better/easier and new versions installed when they come out without 'messing up' the computer as much as it does when installing and then updating with the full application software.
So can someone please advise me of the pros and cons of installing portable apps vs full app please.
