Win 7 taskbar problem fixed

Submitted by scoobford on March 21, 2011 - 3:10pm

If you have Win 7, and you pin the launcher .exe file to the taskbar, and use it, it shows a seperate icon for the actual window. If you pin THAT to the taskbar it stores the settings on the default location(bad). Up until now the only way to avoid this is to do a complex appid hack, but I have found an easier mcguyver solution.
1. get portable app(in this case FF beta portable)
2. pin the 2nd (running window) icon to the taskbar only.
3. use that, but if you are getting an addon or theme, use the portable launcher.exe to keep your settings on the usb

Install full firefox or portable firefox on a new computer?

Submitted by jawkiwi on March 17, 2011 - 4:48pm

I have searched before doing this post, but if there is a link to my answer then I will be glad to know of it

I have just purchased a new laptop/new book.... HP dm1z and am setting it up. Someone has advised that it is better to install portable app as opposed to full applications as they can be removed better/easier and new versions installed when they come out without 'messing up' the computer as much as it does when installing and then updating with the full application software.
So can someone please advise me of the pros and cons of installing portable apps vs full app please.

does Firefox 3.6 run on Windows Server 2003?

Submitted by bpmackow on March 17, 2011 - 1:01am

Some of my school's computers recently "upgraded" to Server 2003. Firefox Portable 3.6 won't run on these machines. I watched the start up in the task manager, and both firefoxportable.exe and firefox.exe start and then close. The splash comes up, the the application just closes.

Is this something to do with Server 2003? Or did my school configure something so that certain apps won't run? The school district is full of a bunch of paranoid control-freaks, and they may have found a new way of restricting our accounts.

Java plugin no longer active in Firefox 4 RC 1 Portable

Submitted by mrgou on March 15, 2011 - 6:42am

I just installed Firefox 4 RC 1 Portable, but Java is no longer available. It's installed locally on my machine, and java applets run fine in Google Chrome Portable and Firefox portable 3.6.15. On the about:plugins page, the Java plugin is no longer listed, while it shows this for 3.6.15:

Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U19

File: npjp2.dll
Version: 6.0.190.4
Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_19 for Mozilla browsers

Any idea?

Unable to add new bookmarks

Portable Firebox version: 3.6.15

Hi,

Since using firefox on my USB card, I have not been able to add/modify any of my bookmarks, since importing them from my workstation version of FF.
Tried the "bookmark this page", dragging the page upto the bookmark section or Bookmark toolbar.

It will let me create a folder in the toolbar, and also if I drag a page to the HOME icon I can change the starting page to that.

But just unable to add new bookmarks [it will let me remove the ones I already have AND let me re add the same link, but not anything new]
