"another instance of firefox is already running" problem

Submitted by porapps on October 17, 2006 - 3:40am

Here we go again...

After running Firefox_Portable_1.5.0.7_en-us.exe inside the folder 'D:\FP' and then running FirefoxPortable.exe inside the folder 'D:\FP\FirefoxPortable' I recieve the infamous "Another instance of Firefox is already running. Please close other instances of Firefox before launching Firefox Portable." error.

Needless to say, I did a search for 'another instance' in the Forum and remain at a loss as to how to correct this.

Some of the forum posts are silly like "don't change the name from Portablefirefox.exe to firefox.exe". Others downright stupid "Just restart the computer, it could be a extension running?". This one is almost criminal "put the .ini file in the same folder as the PortableFirefox.exe"

FP 2.0rc2: Slow tab closing

Submitted by jmbattle on October 16, 2006 - 12:23am

Hello there,

I have been using Portable Firefox (and now Firefox Portable) as my main browser for several months, as I prefer to have everything saved in one folder.

The improvements in Firefox Portable 2.0 are terrific, however I often notice a considerable delay when closing tabs (with the middle mouse button) - occasionally as much as five seconds or so between clicking the mouse button and the tab closing.

Is this a known issue with Firefox Portable? I read one or two posts complaining about slow start-up times caused by Session Saving/Undo functionality. Yet the suggestions to change the Browser.sessionstore.enabled option appear to pre-date v2.0RC2. Furthermore, I am running the application locally, from harddisk so there should not be any slow-downs, surely?

FirefoxPortable.exe blocked

Submitted by PainKiller on October 13, 2006 - 3:31pm

Well, at my school running FirefoxPortable.exe is blocked, however I'm still able to run firefox.exe, I was just wondering if there would be any drawbacks to running that directly, like if it might take away some of the portable aspects?

Well, sorry for the stupid question, but thanks for anyone that helps!

Shockwave install made easy

Submitted by thatguy2223 on October 13, 2006 - 12:11pm

I made this installer by extracting the Shockwave Installer and moving the files manually into my Portable Firefox Plugins folder.

My reason for making this installer is so that users without Administrative Privileges can install the plugin hassle free.

You can download the installer from
