Firefox Portable

FFP stops talking to the internet

Submitted by Wilderness on September 1, 2006 - 6:47pm

I set up FFP on a 1 GB thumb drive yesterday, along with Thunderbird, Foxit Reader, NVU Portable, and a couple other apps. Firefox was up & running like a champ, I imported my bookmarks from my home installation of Firefox, and I was quite happy with it (digital watch & all Wink ).
Seeing as how I still had a ton of space left over on my drive, I got a bright idea (queue dramatic music of something bad about to happen) and attempted to install a minimalist version of Linux on the same drive.
Before i go any further, let me explain my rationalle. The linux installtion (http://runt.mybox.org/) is intended to function if the flash drive is used as a bootable device. The install only uses about 128 MB and a posting on the discussion board for the distro even seems to suggest that it's possible to save media to the drive & access it again http://runt.mybox.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=57&start=0&postdays=0&posto...

Possible FFP 2.0 problem

Submitted by yehoni on September 1, 2006 - 11:47am

Firfox 2.0 is going to include a built-in session manager. Since session managers tend to be an exceedingly bad idea when FFP is installed on a flash drive, I wanted to know if this was going to cause problems. I *think* the session manager is only operative when you perform an update or install an extension, so it shouldn't slow down normal opperation the way most session managers do, but I thought I'd check.

Firefox Icon

Submitted by phillyboy on September 1, 2006 - 5:32am

The Firefox icon at top left corner was easily replacable in previous "beta" version of PFF browser. However, because of hierarchical differences in folder-structure of the current PFF (1.5.0.6), I could not do this easily. How can I replace Firefox icon with mine in Firefox Portable 1.5.0.6? Thanks.

WinRegInstallLocation in nsExtensionManager.js Hack

Submitted by rancherj on August 31, 2006 - 1:45pm

Firefox has a feature to add extensions that are defined in the Windows registry. Well, this is something that I definitely DO NOT want to happen when using portable firefox. It would be a nice feature to have a warning that registry extensions are available, and prompt the user to allow them to occur.

For the short term, I hacked the nsExtensionManager.js by commenting out the lines in the try block, and leaving the catch block alone in the WinRegInstallLocation function. Maybe this info can help somebody else too.

-profile Switch needed urgently!!

Dear John T. Haller,

(I tried to PM this but i couldn't find your e-mailaddress..) I have been using Portable Firefox for a long time now (about 6 months) and LOVE that it works on USB-sticks and CD-ROM's. Actually the way i found it was that i was searching for a Firefox-browser for my Pocket PC, and it isn't THAT portable but still portable enough.

I use Firefox 1.5.0.6 with it and copy the \Data-directory every time i want to use a new profile for my PortableFirex-browser. Until recently this was adequate since all extensions and user data get copied with it, but then i discovered the Firefox Extension Backup Extension(FEBE) and thought that was a great way to manage my profiles. What i discovered was that FEBE looks at the profiles of the app\Firefox-browser and so doesn't allow you to do a re-install to the \PortableFirefox-browser. This was allright though, since i could still copy and zip the \Data-directory and get the same result.

Using launchy.xml to start Firefox Portable from Thunderbird Portable and vice versa

Submitted by gemal on August 30, 2006 - 7:05am

I've posted a solution if you want to start Firefox Portable with within the Thunderbird Portable. So when you use Thunderbird Portable and right click on a link you can choose Firefox Portable. And when you from within Firefox Portable right click on a mailto link can choose Thunderbird Portable.

You can read how to do it at:

How portable firefox is different from a firefox that is built and installed in a Flash

Submitted by rkmovva on August 30, 2006 - 12:44am

Hi Guys,

I like to know how Firefox portable is different from a firefox that built and installed in a Flash

I built firefox(1.5.0.1) for ppc-linux and installed in my compact flash drive. Now I mount that flash on another machine as readonly media and execute.

I do have problem like 3 instances of forefox-bins are created and it hangs forever.

.mozilla folder is created in .root and have no issue with that.

How does the portable firefox different. do you need to do anything extra to make it work??

Regards,
Ravi

Adblock Plus Preferences appear for no reason...

I just moved my Firefox (everything) from my USB drive to the hard drive, and now the Adblock Plus Preferences box appears, at first when I would press a button on the keyboard, and now when I change the site (could be triggered by master password prompt). The only change I made was setting the fixes so that they would adjust for drive letter and the directories so that they'd be accurate. I also got a few unresponsive script notices (quite odd), and I told it to continue on all of them. I've gotten those notices before, but only when a) an autoupdate was interrupted or otherwise messed up or b) when I use a USB1.1 port and have to adjust for drive letter changes with a lot of extension changes (e.g. pending installations).
