How do you scan for Viruses?

Submitted by LordBill on August 28, 2006 - 12:21am

So after reading articles about spyware and USB drives... I was left with the question how do I scan a USB drive?

I know I can point my AV program to scan it, but how about any spyware? I can't seem to point a spyware scanner (I use current Spybod S+D) to the USB. Can't malware embed itself in my USB drive and still mess me up?

And when I surf anywhere with FFP, am I still protected by the friewall on the PC I'm using?

Anyone? Bueller?

Running an exe file from PFF

Submitted by Safetyfast on August 25, 2006 - 4:25pm

I'm building a help and installation CD that will use a local PFF and as part of the process of installing applications I need to execute an exe file. When linking to an exe file I only get the option of saving it when I need to Run it.
What is the trick to enabling the Run for an executable and can I script that so the newbie users don't even see the Run/Save dialog?

There will be no Internet access and it will be a fully closed system so we should be able to relax the security settings.

PFF 1.5.0.6

Thanks

Dialog reports error opening file but file opens anyway

Submitted by pwright2 on August 24, 2006 - 7:10pm

I use Firefox Portable as my default browser on my hard drive. Works fine for everything except MSNBC videos, which I can live without.

Often, though not always, when I trigger a link in some other application, I will get a dialog box which reads like this:

Error opening file.
File not found.
http://localhost:85/admin/myjsas.php

This one was triggered by clicking for the info page on MyJSAS server. Other things, like links in my email or in a document cause similar dialog boxes. They go away when I click OK.

The link does open, even before I click OK. But ... is there something I have set up wrong?

Writting to USB drive for 60 seconds after closing Portable Firefox?

Submitted by 68Firebird on August 24, 2006 - 3:56pm

I just started using Portable Firefox. It is working great. But I do have 1 gripe, When I close out portable Firefox I have to wait about 60 seconds before I can pull the drive out.

I have cache set to 0 in Firefox. Can’t think of what else to do to cut down on the writes to the drive when I close out Firefox. Any suggestions? Or is this normal behavior for Portable Firefox to write to the drive for 60sec when closing it out?

I am using a corsair 1gig flash voyager USB drive.

Trouble with saving and removing bookmarks

Submitted by bdawg923 on August 21, 2006 - 11:19pm

I have FirefoxPortable Bon Echo Beta 1 running on my PC. It's the version that first got the visual refresh for the tabs and x's. So I had Firefox 2 Beta 1 (portable version) running before this one, and it was the one that just got the visual refresh. So I copied the profile folder and config file into the new version. The problem I'm now having is that I have some bookmarks that I want to remove and some to add. I remove the bookmarks, add others, and after I restart the browser, the bookmark I removed is still there and the bookmarks I added aren't there. This happens every time. Does anybo

Extensions installing to HDD?

Submitted by syberwolff on August 21, 2006 - 6:38pm

I was at work today and were just doing training so if noone has questions we do whatever we want so I was looking through and installing extensions onto Fire Fox Portable from here(U3 edition) And I just got home and popped in my U3 drive and started up FireFox Portable and none of my extensions were there.

Did it install the extensions to the HDD? I can't check until tommorow.

Is it because I have the U3 eddition? Should I uninstall that, download the regular portableapps edition and then just install it into U3 using the manifest hack?

How do I get it to install extensions onto the USB drive?

Using Firefox Portable from Work (LAN)

Hi! Hope somebody can help me. I just downloaded and installed Firefox Portable into my notebook-- had to resort to the portable app because I need Admin rights to install a software that modifies the registry-- and I dont have admin password. It worked fine when I browsed the intranet, but when I try surfing any websites outside of the intranet, google, or Firefox's default homepage for example, I cant connect and just get timed out. If I try using Internet Explorer, theres no problem with the connection. How should I configure (or whatever) the Firefox Portable app for it to work?
