FF Portable as Default Browser

Submitted by gracie on January 10, 2013 - 3:19pm

I loved FF portable so much, I installed it on my desktop, thinking to use it as an alternative to IE for certain sites while having less "saved" data than a regular desktop installation of FF would. It works like a charm, started from a shortcut that leads to C:\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe instead of the Firefox.exe file. I was curious what would happen if I set FF to be my default browser, but when I do that from within FF portable, it sets the Firefox.exe file to be called---and that doesn't have any of my personalizations, bookmarks, etc.

Potential regression on v18 (internet connection behind a proxy)

Submitted by Ginko_Aloe on January 9, 2013 - 5:41am

Hi,

I may have experienced a regression after the v18 upgrade : i'm actually behind an enterprise Internet proxy. v17 and previous versions managed to connect properly using default system Internet proxy settings but apparently, v18 can't do the same.

Since setting manually proxy settings don't solve the problem (this proxy is pretty weird and do block a lot of stuff), I had to downgrade to v17. And it actually works.

Since I can't install anything on the laptop, I can't tell you if the bug is in Firefox v18 or in the portable edition of FFv18.

Are PortableApps versions of FF forks in development?

Submitted by seding1983 on January 6, 2013 - 6:27pm

I have a 64-bit computer and use Waterfox, the "unofficial" 64-bit version of Firefox (Mozilla has not yet released a stable 64-bit build). There is also Pale Moon, which is built on a lot of the same code and comes in both 32- and 64-bit versions. I'm just wondering if there are any plans to PortableApp-ize other Firefox variants such as these.

Firefox Portable with VLC Plugin?

Submitted by Dragonpoet101 on January 3, 2013 - 5:35pm

So I am running Firefox 17.0.1 Portable on a usb drive. I am trying to add in the plugins for several different extensions. I have managed to add Java (jPorable), Shockwave, Flashplayer, Sliverlight, and Adobe Reader all by copying the correct .dll's over to the plugins folder designated for the corresponding applications. So now I want to add the supporting .dll's to the plugins folder for Windows Media files and Quicktime files. I looked everywhere about how to install the correct .dll's for Windows Media files and had no luck.

I use IE7 at work, want a browser on a flash drive to use

Submitted by GoneToPlaid on January 2, 2013 - 2:12pm

I have to use IE7 at work and I always have problems with memory leaks, HTML5 sites, and just all around crapiness from IE7. I would like to install Firefox on a flash drive and use it at work. Is this something the network guys will be able to detect and trace back to me? Also, I was warned about redundancy but it was not explained, any ideas?

Thanks

Portable opens pages in desktop FF if desktop FF already open

Submitted by Cman139 on January 1, 2013 - 3:55pm

1. USB contains FFPortable and a www folder containing index.html
2. I run FFP with index.html on the command line. Sort of like this:
FirefoxPortable index.html
If the desktop already has a copy of the desktop version of FF running, then the index.html file is open in the desktop instead of being open in the USB FF. Of course the USB FF has all the plugins needed to view index.html.

I've tried adding -new-window to the command line but it just opened a new window on the desktop instance.

So I need to either instruct users to close any copies of FF before plugging in USB.
OR

Bookmarks in 'Private Browsing by PortableApps.com'

Submitted by John van Someren on December 30, 2012 - 6:48pm

I cannot transfer bookmarks from Firefox Portable 17.0.1 to Private Browsing by PortableApps.com

I have saved my bookmarks in Firefox Portable 17.0.1 and they are in a file called bookmarks-2012-12-30.json. Firefox chose the filename. It then successfully read the file back in, so I know that it's OK.

I cannot find how to import these bookmarks into Private Browsing by PortableApps.com. When I eventually find where to import bookmarks (and I can only find it occasionally) it asks for an html file. Nor can I find anyway of exporting the bookmarks from 17.0.1 in html format.

Copy of Desktop Ff to USB

Submitted by thomasmann on December 29, 2012 - 7:54pm

Hello, I am completely new to this.

I have downloaded and installed portableapps on an empty USB stick.
I have then clicked the apps I want on it, and they were installed there.

But... what I want is my own complete Ff setup, incl bookmarks and addons, that I have on my desktop.
If I remember correctly, that would be the Ff Profile.
But, naturally the folder where I normally would paste a copy of the profile, is not on the USB stick.....

How do I transfer this to the USB stick?

Thanks

[Closed] Crash Reporter stores reports in AppData, does not submit, does not handle restarts

Submitted by Drugoy on December 29, 2012 - 1:13pm

Hi.
I've noticed that whenever firefox crashes - crash dumps get saved to the '%AppData%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports' folder.
I think it's incorrect, because I'm a user of a portable browser and I expect to have all the browser related data in it's portable folder.

I've used Process Explorer and found out that process 'firefox.exe' has an environment called MOZ_CRASHREPORTER_DATA_DIRECTORY and it points to the '%AppData%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports' folder.
