Automatic update causes loss and corruption of files on the flash usb drive

Submitted by fabioofranco on September 27, 2006 - 7:33am

I have this problem: I have installed on my kingstone 1Gb USB flashdrive the following portable app: portable open office, clamwin, firefox, thunderbird, gaim, 7-zip, VLC, all portable and downloaded from portableapps.com. All of them were running fine until the time thunderbird asked for a update from the Internet. After that the update was downloaded and I restarted the program. A window opened up and tell about the progress of update. This happened in two time with the same result: data loss and corruption of all my data on the flash drive:

First time: the update was sucessful but I lost all my e-mails and data from openoffice

cross OS usage

If this has been discussed before, I apologize.

Is there any way to set one profile on a USB drive that can be used be both Thunderbird Portable for Windows and Thunderbird Portable for OS X without any hassle of syncing? Basically, I will be using both OS's and want my one profile to be active for both versions without noticing a difference.

Thanks for the help.

Automatically check email?

Submitted by EOBeav on September 22, 2006 - 2:32pm

I downloaded, installed, and started using Thunderbird Portable about 20 minutes ago. Wow! What a cool thing, and it was really easy to implement.

My only question, I know that Outlook Express has an option to automatically check email every x number of minutes. I can't seem to locate this option in Thunderbird. Is it not available in Thunderbird, or am I not looking in the right place? Thanks in advance for your help.

Oh, also, I configured it to check my GMail account, but I will be having it check other accounts as well. Will the port settings all be the same, regardless of th

Problem when syncing profiles of TP and TBP (both with GPG/Enigmail)

On my desktop PC I use Thunderbird (with GPG/Enigmail), when I'm out I'm using Thunderbird Portable (with GPG/Enigmail) on my USB hard drive.

To have all my mails on both installations, I tried to sync the profile folder of TP

C:\Documents and Settings\dhoughal\Application Data\Thunderbird\profiles\xyz

to TBP's profile folder

F:\Program Files\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile

That worked fine. But when syncing TBP's profile folder back to TB's profile folder and starting my local installation of TB, I get problems with Enigmail, as TBP has reset the GPG executable path in prefs.js to

solution to problem: IMAP mail disappears when changing computers

First, thank you for making thunderbird portable! There is a slight problem, though, when using IMAP servers. Thunderbird seems to write the absolute path to the mail folders in panacea.dat, in the profile directory. When the drive letter changes, Thunderbird gets confused, and after starting it again, all previous imap mail messages disappear. To fix this problem, the drive letter for the folders specified in panacea.dat must be updated before thunderbird is started. I've written a little batch file to do this, I wanted to share it, so I'm attaching it. However, I'm sure there would be a better way to do this.

Cant get a connection on Thunderbird Portable at work

Submitted by radioheadboy on September 20, 2006 - 3:40pm

I have set up a USB key with portable versions of Firefox and Thunderbird so I can use both at home and work and various other laptops I use. When I came to use Firefox at work, I had to put in Manual Proxy Configuration....a HTTP Proxy number and a port number that I found in IE on my work PC. I presume this is something to do with the work firewall.

Anyway, I am now trying to get Thunderbird to work on my work PC but it doesnt seem things to fill in as Firefox. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Phil
