Serious installation problem with TB 3.1.7 Rev2

Submitted by Paul Gauci on December 27, 2010 - 6:58am

I have just installed TB 3.1.7 Rev2. When I tried to run it I got this message:

Thunderbird could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.

I downloaded and installed again but I still got the same result.

What would the problem be please?

Paul

Summary of set up :

Kingston 8gb USB Thumbdrive running Portable apps
Thunderbird 3.1.7

Summary of problem

OK, so my PC decided to spectacularly crash on Xmas Eve (date not important!), and after a quick reboot of the PC and successful re-start of portable apps and Thunderbird Portable 3.1.7 I noticed ALL of my work emails going back from January this year (2010) are missing.

I have 2 main inboxes :
Work - Collecting mail from work POP server
Home - Collecting mail from personal Gmail

TBP 3.1.7 "Empty Folders" Syndrome

Submitted by Michael Anthony on December 21, 2010 - 2:52am

Ever since upgrading to Thunderbird Portable 3+, I noticed that something goes wrong whenever I plug my memory-stick into an offline machine: Every IMAP folder disappears, and only leaves an empty Inbox.

It does, however, remember which accounts I have installed.

All the mail seems to be present in Data\Profiles.

Deleting the header index files (.msf) doesn't seem to do the trick.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate (offline machine), and Windows XP SP2 (online machine, internet cafe).

Any ideas?

Thunderbird Touches Files Unnecessarily

Submitted by AlexFekken on December 13, 2010 - 2:41am

This is just a minor, almost cosmetic, problem (unless it reflects a deeper issue), but I thought I'd report it anyway.

My mailbox consist of hundreds of folder organised as a tree and I noticed Thunderbird usually touches (i.e. changes the timestamp of) many folders that I haven't even accessed. Can anybody explain why this is happening and if it can be avoided?

The reason why this is an issue for me is that my primary backups are synchronised copies that I preview manually. And every day Thunderbird causes hundreds of out-of-sync situations that I should not have to deal with.

Installing GPG_for_Thunderbird_Portable and Engima

Submitted by ka.aly on December 10, 2010 - 11:29am

Dear TB users

I'm needing to get GPG to work for my current ThunderbirdPortable 3.0.6 installation, on Windows XP SP2.

The first option I went with was trying to install Enigma enigmail-1.1.2-tb-win(2).xpi as an Add-on, and install gpg4win independently, so to have Enigma just for providing the mail encrypt menu option. However, Enigma installation from the Add-on wizard was not successful.

Bug in PTB 3.1.7??

Submitted by kermik on December 10, 2010 - 7:52am

Anyone else found a bug in PTB 3.1.7 which won't let me open multiple instances of PTB at the same time? And yes, I have set "AllowMultipleInstances=true" in Thunderbird.ini and this was never a problem with version 3.1.6, from which I upgraded today.
(and please don't question why I want to open multiple instances, this is how I set up my mail system and it has never been a problem before.)
