Portable App Directory™ - Built-In App Store

The PortableApps.com Platform has an app store built right in, so you can find and install the apps you want with just a few clicks. You can find your favorite web browser, popular games, handy utilities, educational tools, image editors, chat programs and more. There are hundreds of free apps available with new apps added every week. With no download limit, you can download one app or one hundred. Best of all, you don't even need to give up your email address to get them.

Organize With Folders, Favorites, Type-To-Find Search and More

You can organize apps into folders automatically or create your own that work the way you think. Pick apps as favorites and they'll always be right at the top for instant access. You can even have the menu learn which apps you use most and keep them front and center. And when you need to find an app quickly, just start typing, and you'll find what you're looking for. When you've found your app, just hit enter and the first app will start right up.

PortableApps.com Updater - Your Apps Are Up To Date

With PortableApps.com, you don't need to worry about making sure your software is up to date. When a new security fix for your browser is released or a new feature in your favorite game is available, the PortableApps.com Updater will automatically let you know. Just click a button and the updates are downloaded and installed without messing up your settings and saved files. And if you're in a hurry or using a computer on a slow connection, you can wait until later to update with just a click.

Themes, Colors and Your Personal Menu

Whether you want your menu to look modern or retro, light or dark, glassy or simple, the PortableApps.com Platform has an option for you. With a dozen bundled themes each with a rainbow of color selections, you could pick a different look every day for months and never have the same menu twice. And you can make the menu your own by adding your own personal picture to the upper right-hand corner.

Portable Fonts

The PortableApps.com Platform supports the ability to carry fonts on your portable device and use them with your portable software without needing to install them on the local machine. Now when you're working on that important presentation for work or that poster for your charity drive, you can be as creative as you like with the look and still have it look and print the same on every computer you use. TrueType (TTF), OpenType (OTF), TrueType Collections (TTC) and other font formats are all supported.

And if there's something we haven't added yet that you'd like to see, just ask in the forums. We add new features every month!

Nice to see that after month of work the new version is out now! Ok now i`m a mac user but i test it on my XP machine and it works fine. awesome work.
And i'm proud to see that my PA updater icon still in use. THX!

Congratulations goes out to all people behind PA.com, Devs, Beta Testers, Users, Themers, John T Haller and all the other guys i forgot now.

kind regards
NeoRame

Hell was full, so I came back!!!
Sorry for my lousy English!!!

John T. Haller's picture

Thanks NeoRame. Smile You know you can use PA.c on your Mac by installing any of the 3 major Wine variants for Mac, right?

BTW - We're going to be launching custom themes using this new engine (chromes, mattes, etc) shortly. Would you be interested in rejoining the team as a designer officially or unofficially?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

mhhh the theming stuff sounds interesting. how looks the new theme format? it's now possible to set transparency parts?

Sorry for my lousy English!!!

Congratulations on reaching a milestone!

But, I have to say, I've been less excited about the latest frills and fine tuning. As far as I'm concerned, once you added the updater and the categories and made things more stable, that was more than enough for me.

Now there will be monthly updates? Well, not a bad idea, I guess.

But what I've really been hoping and waiting for is a return to adding more apps! I do hope that's coming soon!

We're working on upgrading the site this month and will start releasing new apps again likely in the next week or so Smile

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Great, I can't wait for the new apps.

Carterrk, makes a good point. Try not to go down the road of so many usefull applications and bloat the stuff. Pick what it needs and stick to it. The main useage should always just be an overview of installed apps.
Enfin,... WHOOOHooo, thanks for the new platform!

Gord Caswell's picture

Be patient.

Yes, it would be great if there were thousands of apps available, however, the app stores you're thinking of have apps that are written by thousands of individual developers or companies and submitted to Google, Apple, or Microsoft, all of which have large teams dedicated to approving apps for release in their "store".

Here, we have, at the moment, about a dozen or so individuals working in their spare time to portablize apps, which are then verified by an even smaller team to ensure the app is ready to be released, and then the app is submitted to John T. Haller for digital signing.

Also, John had indicated a while ago that new apps were being held off on until 10.0 got released. Now that it has been released, new apps will start to get released "soon". Don't ask for a specific timeline, as there's no specific timeline available.

Thank you, John, for a much awaited release. PA is simply awesome. Simple, efficient and nice to see. I am using it right now on Kubuntu 11.10+Wine and I must say that I'm impressed. It works very nice, without errors.

Micro world, macro-beauty...

John T. Haller's picture

After the release it was noticed that enabling the ALT- shortcuts (open Documents with ALT-D) were interfering with find-as-you-type searches. This was missed in testing. We pushed out a quick 10.0.1 update which is available now and corrects the issue. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

This is amazing! Congratulations on this release. The theme looks great I'll be grabbing the custom USB drive later today Biggrin

BTW, what was the release naming decided on?

I expected some version bump... but now it looks like PA.com Platfrom has entered Google/Mozilla Great-Versioning-Race?

Doesn't make me less happy about the long anticipated final release. My hearty congratulations for making it happen Smile

.... BTW - We're going to be launching custom themes using this new engine (chromes, mattes, etc) shortly.

I too would like the rainbow [I prefer dark] back.

----------
=^..^=

Rainbow (dark and light) are nice (and +1 for bringing them back), but don't forget the Violet theme from 2.0 Beta 4, that does not look as good in any later version than it did in that older version (hugs my copy of the 2.0 Beta 4 installer - as well as including the nicer version of the Violet theme, this one allows solanus' very nice PurpleSpace theme to be used).

I used to have a sig...until one of the mods ate it

John T. Haller's picture

These were example themes just top show off what was possible in the beta. They were never intended to be bundled in the final version.

That said, we're working on some really cool looking themes (including updates of those) with our designer. Now that 10.0 has gone gold, we can start adding in cool stuff more regularly. If you turn on beta channel updates in the platform, you'll be first to get to try it out.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

solanus's picture

My bad, I hadn't seen it in the original post, and missed it in the comments.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the new themes work, and modifying my PAM Theme Builder to work with that format.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Good Morning John;

First thank you for the hard work you and others have done.

Second does this new Flash drive already have the "PortableApps.Com" engraved on it and all a person has to add is a name. I thought I would ask because I like the one modeled so to speak very much.

Frank D. Hubeny

John T. Haller's picture

Just click to the site and you'll see a picture of both sides. The PA.c logo is small in the lower right of the top of the drive. We didn't want to do a big garish one like most retail flash drives have.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Good Afternoon John;

Sorry for my post. I missed the nice picture somehow and like it very much. I also agree with you it is nice touch.

Frank D. Hubeny

Great! I'm curious about this new version.
However I can't find instructions on how to upgrade an older PortableApps.com Platform?

John T. Haller's picture

If you have an older one without automatic updates built in, you can download the v10 installer and just install it right over your existing one. All your apps will be preserved. Just download it, run the installer, and when it asks where you want to install, just select the directory with the StartPortableApps.exe or Start.exe of the old platform (usually the root directory of your portable drive).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Simeon's picture

just install the new verson right over your existing one.

"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate

are you hoping to make a different icon for the PA directory window or is it going to look like the updater icon still. yes, i am that observant and still notice the icon is the same.

John T. Haller's picture

They share the same display code right now but eventually the directory will become more sophisticated and get its own icon.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John T. Haller's picture

Not yet. But it's on the "confirmed in upcoming releases" list. It'll be on the Advanced options screen and you'll get to pick a place on your drive to keep em.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John T. Haller's picture

The directory is open to all publishers. The only criteria is that the apps have to follow PortableApps.com Format and can't contain any malware/spyware/badware. You start out by creating a package and posting it in the Beta Test forum for others to test and verify the work. From there, we're just reforming the release team to officially review it and move it from beta, to release candidate to final. Publishers who submit their apps directly get fast-tracked.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Amarus's picture

Here I was still getting that "Brand New" smell from NEXT. Now behold & embrace the lion, LEO. As if that wasn't enough **BAMN** now we have the world best flash drive USB 3.0, fitted with the PA.com logo, as well as, my call sign. Outstanding!!!

Congratulations to the PA.com team on this historical milestone.

---

Glad to hear that custom themes are coming back. Would the documentation on the HowTo for the new theme engine be included in the PA.com beta platform? I just would like to give it a try.

in_vino_veritas,_in_aqua_sanitas.

John T. Haller's picture

We're glad you like it. We're pretty proud of the platform and the drive. And this is just the start. Now we can start adding all the little features and functionality to really round things out and start new releases again.

We'll be posting documentation and debuting a Themes Gallery in conjunction with the release. We'll likely have a way for beta users to start testing themes early, even before the GUI and translations are done.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I'm glad it has arrived. This is a very respectable outcome of your efforts over the last months (years?). That even exceeds my expectations!

Nice work - platform and companion as well! If I only didn't own five superflous flash drives... But wait, why not another one, especially with my favorite software project. Blum

The font issue has been resolved (seems my uneducated guess was right Wink ) despite some odd fonts not displayed properly in MSword's font list (a quick test on Aurabesh worked for me, though...). No deal breaker as they mostly are perfectly usable in the document.
The GDI leak does not affect my work anymore (ony 300 new handles vs. over 700 means enough headroom in normal usage).

I like it! Smile

John T. Haller's picture

It was the unload procedure. A copy and paste error on my part with the fonts handling. Glad you like it and the GDI bug isn't biting you anymore.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Platform and PA.c Companion look so sexy! (*W*)

(Sorry for the language....)

You know what, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life TAKE THE LEMONS BACK! Get mad!! I don't want your lemons; what am I supposed to do with THESE!?

Congratulations for your hard work on this.
I like the choice you made for the design (sometimes surprising but it's refreshing to see different ways to do something).
The result is wonderfull and very usefull.
Thank you

This is the final stable version, and it isn't accessible for screen readers and blind people.
The updater and the backup utility are accessible, but the menu is completely unreadable.
When will you solve this problem?
Thanks.

John T. Haller's picture

If you check the bugs page, it's the top bug: "Platform not accessible to screen readers or keyboard navigation. This is considered a critical issue and a fix for this is nearly complete. Some functionality (Folders, Options, App Directory, Updater, Backup and Restore) is now accessible in the v10.0+ release via the System Tray icon menu."

A fix for this was planned and developed for this stable release. It was based on the simple menu test EXE we made available and ensured worked on NVDA, JAWS and the MS screen reader in Windows. Everything worked well. We spent hours in development implementing these fixes in the menu itself. Unfortunately, the end result was not functional. The component we used for the buttons in the menu was so slow that it made the menu basically unusable once 34 instances of it were in use in the menu (20 apps, up/down buttons, folders, eject and close). Actually navigating the menu became sluggish and you could see it flicker as you selected items. Scrolling resulted in watching it individually update all 20 app entries starting at the bottom. In short, it was a disaster.

So, rather than release this version, we had to make the painful decision of scrapping the hours of work we did on the new display setup and going back to the original display system in order to get the release done. This meant we were able to get the release done in time for the launch of the new flash drives (and before the community got restless) but we had to delay screen reader accessibility for another couple weeks. This wasn't a decision we made lightly and it certainly wasn't left off for lack of effort.

We've already made progress on an accessibility method used in conjunction with our current display system. It works in NVDA and Jaws and works with keyboard navigation as well. The code is already complete for the folders/icons on the right-hand side (Documents, Apps, Help, Search, etc) and the Eject/Close buttons and has begun for the left-hand side (20 app entries and the scroll up and down buttons). We'll be releasing this on the beta channel shortly, perhaps as soon as this weekend. It will become the 10.1 release, whose top priority is screen reader accessibility and keyboard navigation.

In the end, I am truly sorry that we missed our original mark of having screen reader support in the 10.0 release. Rest assured that it is a top priority, though, and we will have support available before the end of the month.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John sweetheart,

Thanks for the update, but I miss the "bolded favorite apps". Was it intended? Wink

Anyway, good job so far. I like the addition of the search function, and hope someday it is enhanced enough to tell me which app is for what, without my having to rename apps into more descriptive names (many a time, I forget what a particular app is there for; this happened with the expresso app which I had to rename to make it more meaningful for me; but again, I can add only so many characters before the name gets cut off).

Keep up the good job. Smile

Thanks for all the work to make PA accessible. I just installed 10.0.1 and it is still not accessible but I will keep checking back for updates.

Tia,
Don Raikes

I heard it is the stable version, but I keep on getting several error messages just by hiding/showing the program...besides it launches programs I didn't ask...also it also shows an error message if I try to change my personalized image more than once. Could any of these have to do with administrator permissions (which I doubt) or any kind of bugs (wich I also tend to doubt)?

Great news and congrats on the latest stable release.
Due to my reliance on the categories feature of the old PAM Mod
I've been using that all this time while awaiting this release (I was
too lazy to do any testing).
Now I just have to figure out how I'm gonna go from PAM Mod to
Platform 10. Might have to start from scratch (using another
drive of course). This might be fun, or not. Smile

Marc

John T. Haller's picture

It could get a little hairy as PAM Mod stored settings within the app folders themselves (always a bad idea). But you may be able to upgrade right over it (losing existing categories but getting all the automatic ones, of course), or possibly alongside to make things easier.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

You misspelled the name of the band! I used to use PortableApps when I was on a Windows computer, but now I use Linux and it's so much better!

TwoDogS out!
Game developers are soooo hot. I wish I was a game, they would develop me, and complete me, and....ok, I just threw up in my own mouth...

John T. Haller's picture

I've fixed the typo, thanks. Even on Linux, you can use PortableApps.com. We've designed it to work with Wine and adjust to many of its quirks. So, you can still set your drive up with your favorite apps and settings within PortableApps.com running under Wine on Linux at home and then be able to carry it around and use it on the Windows PCs you encounter while out and about. Smile

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John, it'd sure be nice if you could indicate on the App Directory which apps will run on Wine! Having to look at the detail on each individual app to determine that & whether it's Open Source or freeware really sucks. A couple of columns for those on the Directory page would be extremely helpful! Yes, I know you can turn off freeware but it's nice to see what *all* the apps are & make a conscious choice, not a mindless across-the-board decision.

Great job on the new release! Out of curiosity, where'd you hide the old legacy Platform & Suite?

Ken Herbert's picture

If you look at the section where that icon is, it is the types of storage devices on which PortableApps can be carried, including DropBox and other types of cloud storage.

If you really want to use Dropbox as portable app with PA.c Platform, you should try DropboxPortableAHK - it's well-supported, open-source, portable version of Dropbox written in AutoHotkey. Unfortunately it hasn't .paf version yet Sad

wmq [vi em kjuː]

I remember just starting to use portable apps along time ago and look at this, it's revolutionary and practical it's the only reason why I keep my flash drive on me at all times(you never know when you need a browser other than IE or word processor. Congratulations this Is a big update you deserve a big trophy :). Congrats on how far portable apps has come

Cman

i hadn't used it in a while, well, occasionally, as I am not very portable myself, these days, but recently put it on my external drive (2TB) ... takes a few seconds to boot up due to drive inactivity, but sure is nice to have, in addition to my 'installed' apps. I am gradually migrating to the portable universe and have taken to even installing non-portable apps on a 2nd partition, rather than the windows 'system' partition, as I enjoy reinstalling windows as often as possible. (joke)

Glad to hear it is working on linux. I was just thinking (before I read all the really nice posts in this thread) that a 'linux' version would be cool. I think, though I am no expert, that most or all linux programs are actually 'portable' by default, if the 'dependencies' are met, however that works. On the other hand, maybe none are portable? I think it is possible, but wine is cool, so here we have the best windows software available, ready to use on Linux. Very nice.

Now, all you really need is a boot-loader and a portable OS menu for DOS (or whatever the OS version of that OS is, i forget) Windows or Linux type of OS's, in portable iterations. Of course, having a USB 3.0 stick with at least 64 or 128 GB would be ideal. On to the future! LOL... I can clearly see now the Portable Apps Computer Stick. Just plug in to your network hub to connect to all your wireless devices like your TV (HD of course), Cablebox, Telephone, Blender, Microwave... all manageable from one secure USB key.

Anyways, the future is up to US (and the rest of the world, provided they legally immigrate to the US)

Thanks (John Smile ) and Merry Christ-mass

;>jamvaru

Been waiting for this a long time. I've tried it, and it's awesome!
Thank you, developers!

Skitter302's picture

I would like to give a big THANK YOU to all the devs that worked on this menu. It is better than I thought it could be. It looks new but still has that classic PA.c feel. Keep up the good work.

Load the App and Play

if you want the menu transparent you can do this in the options inside the pa platform so its not realy a bug just an option

I don't think you understood what he was saying. He's not referring to the global Platform opacity, but to "some of the program icons [being] shown ... with a black background".

I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1

I love portable apps because it is really useful and you can carry all your favorite apps with you and take different browsers with you, but my only problem is that i need proxies to access the blocked contents.

I also noticed that some of the features from the old platform like hide desktop icon are not included in this version.
But so far the platform it self is fantastic! keep up the good work.

John T. Haller's picture

Hiding desktop icons is included in the platform but there isn't a GUI option for it in 10.0.1, so you'd need to manually edit the INI file. The GUI option will return in the update this week.

Manual proxy support is on the list: https://portableapps.com/node/28593

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

may you please add an option to the options? that would be really helpful

thanks for the reply john!
And by the way i know i could hide the desktop by editing the ini because you told me when i posted in the beta testings.

Great Job!

Congrats. I wish there will be 1.5TB USB drive soon.

And personalized design to order Smile

Great job team!

the drive spins down when idle, not sure how long it takes, but it takes quite a few seconds for it to get active again, like when you start your menu or if the menu is in memory when you click on a program, and then the entire damn windows xp has to stop and wait for the stupid drive to spin up

also, noticed on my fresh install (of windows xp) that the portableappsupdater.exe had to modify a registry key relating to http proxy of some sort

i thought staying out of the registry was the hallmark of the paf system?

;>jamvaru

John T. Haller's picture

The updater uses the host's configuration of connection to the internet via standard Windows APIs in order to connect and download files. This means that it will automatically work at schools and businesses. It does mean that it will create a general registry entry for the Windows component itself if it's never been used by another app. It is, however, a generic entry for a pre-installed Windows component, not something tied to the updater.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I'm still unable to make the launcher update LibreOffice. It always says there's a new version available when looking for updates, but at the end of the update process I only get an error message and that's all. It says the downloaded copy of LibreOffice portable is not valid and can not be installed.
I was trying to remove the application and "reinstall" it, but still won't work.

BTW which folder is being used for downloading these updates?

John T. Haller's picture

You can uninstall the app within your platform and then manually download the current version from the app's homepage here on our site. It could be that your internet provider interrupts long downloads.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I'm pretty sure it can't cause the problem, because it happens on any kind of network. In public networks, in my high-school's network and at home too. Also I won't be able to download and install it manually either in this case.

John T. Haller's picture

Why can't you just download and install it manually? If you can't, there's no way the updater could do it for you, either.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Sorry, I'm never learned the english, except from computer games.

So, what I'm trying to say is: if the PortableApps.com updater can't download LibreOffice for me because you say it's being interrupted by my provider then I shouldn't be able to download it manually either, because that would be interrupted by my provider too. But this is not the case, I can just download it fine with Opera, or IE, or Firefox... actually with anything that can download apps from the internet. There's no need for a download manager to do this, it will install fine. I'm only having the problem when I'm trying to update it with PortableApps.com launcher. But if nobody else faced this problem, then your app must be fine, I just tought it's some kind of bug.

3D1T0R's picture

If "your internet provider interrupts long downloads" (as John suggested may be your problem), or for some other reason the size of the download is what's causing issues (unstable internet connection? etc.? IDK), then you should try downloading it with a download manager that allows for resuming of incomplete downloads, resume the download (if necessary) till it finishes, and install from that.

For a good DownLoad Manager, I'm going to recommend wxDownload Fast (as it's Portable, and works fairly well [and Fast Wink ] for me).

~3D1T0R

I understand there are several ways to get LibreOffice updated, I just wanted to use the auto-update feature in PortableApps.com launcher, that's all. It's a built-in function, it would be awesome if it could work flawless, without any errors.

But I appreciate your replies and thank you for all the work you guys doing to make us all these freeware apps portable!

3D1T0R's picture

Yes, DownThemAll is great (I use it all the time, and love it), but seeing as it's an extension to FireFox, and I have no way of knowing what browser another user is using (unless they state which in their post) I recommended the best Browser Agnostic Portable Download Manager I've used: wxDownload Fast (WinWGet works, but has some known issues and doesn't appear to be maintained at the moment, DamnVid I have no experience with, and DownThemAll is awesome, but it's FireFox specific)

~3D1T0R

Hi, if you are also from Hungary...

There is this file:

For LibreOffice updates it has pairs of lines like this:

DownloadFile_Hungarian=LibreOfficePortable_3.6.1_MultilingualAll.paf.exe
Hash_Galician=60dd2918b883fe4f853eb8fd93488fd1

But for Hungarian the 2nd line has an error: "Hash_Galician" instead of "Hash_Hungarian"

Unfortunately upon launch of updater, the file is being overwritten by a fresh one.

The Hungarian hash is now properly included. Sorry about that.

You're welcome. I just switched it to a better fix. It now downloads the normal rather than all version, saving some download bandwidth, install time and install space instead. It was set to all for an older version where Hungarian was accidentally left out of the Normal language build.

Good work, but to be honest the feature I was most looking forward to was portable file associations, which doesn't seem to be part of this release. I've used both eXpresso and PortableFileAssociator and find them both lacking. The former because it only works with Windows Explorer and the latter because it has to open a window and be manually started every time. And most importantly, both are a hassle to configure manually. Something that would recognize which Portable Apps are installed and what files they can open would be great.
