Has anyone ever "dropped" a portable apps install into a WinPE ISO file?

Submitted by zarraza on August 19, 2013 - 3:43pm

I have a vendor that sent me a winPE boot CD to use with their encryption software, but there is very limited functionality with said ISO file - what I would like to know is if it is possible to open up the ISO file with http://www.winiso.com/products/winiso-free.html and add the portable apps directory into my ISO file to have my entire suite of apps available in my winPE ISO file - virus scans, FTP, and any and all other tools that I may need at my disposal.

first, is it possible?

NTFS permission problem

Submitted by farat_as on August 11, 2013 - 12:26pm

Hi,

There is 3 part on my HDD:

C:\ Windows 7
E:\ Ntfs part (includes just my document files and portable apps)
F:\ Windows 8

I format Windows 8 and Windows 7 yesterday.

Now I can write for files on E:\ part with admin user. But windows 7's and windows 8's normal user can not write subdir of E:\.

Taht's why I can not use some portable apps Sad They start as ready-only mode which is not good for me.

How can I give full-control permission for all user of Windows 7 and Windows 8 (admin and other normal users) for E:\ and it's subdirs?

What is a portable app: the Windows Registry

Submitted by djc on August 8, 2013 - 6:56am

To quote from an official page of the site: "A portable app doesn't leave registry entries behind except those automatically generated by Windows".

But this isn't true of everything available here, for instance Skype and the utilities from Sysinternals (Microsoft), and possibly others. And Skype, even in the portable version, still puts things in the user's profile on the system partition.

Just noting this. These items are still much lighter weight than their non-portable variants.

Write-protect on USB drive and minimising the effect on Portable Apps

Submitted by PortApple on August 7, 2013 - 6:55am

I was being tempted to buy a shiny USB3 device on this site and then I remembered that I had promised myself not to use devices that didn't allow me to write-protect the contents if I had to use them in someone else's PC...

I did a search (I tried "Write lock") but most discussion dated back to 2007 and were quite short anyway. Two questions:

1. Does anyone know of an "ordinary" USB drive that has the write protect feature that I have with an SD card in a USB "convertor"

Update History

Submitted by tlchost on July 26, 2013 - 7:36am

Is there a way to have a listing of the dates application were auto-updated.

I just had about 5 or 6 apps updated...and I did not note which ones...so I don't know which ones to copy from my usb stick to my hard drive.

Also, is there a way to let a list of apps installed on the usb stick should it die and I want to reconstruct it?

thanks
