SQuirrel SQL Client - ist his only portable

Submitted by newbie_nz on June 21, 2010 - 7:35pm

Hi all,

I just want to know if this program is already considered portable as long as I use the JAVA portable to run it.

I've downloaded the JAR file and it seems to install in a "contained" directory.

Link of the program is as below:

Any advise will be very much appreciated. Thanks

Secure contained portable apps

Submitted by kenf on June 20, 2010 - 11:57am

Is it possible to configure or create Portable Apps in such a way that it would provide more security by only allowing a program to operate within the limits of a defined file system. Ie portable apps would create a cage around its self and applications so even if they are malicoius they can not get outside the cage either to read confidential information or to spread viruses etc? This would allow users to run the software they need but also keeping the IT people happy.

removing a portable app?

Please excuse me if I am in the wrong forum or if this is just a terribly noobish question.
I dl'd photshop CS5 expanded version, with the repousse options, and additional plugins.
The program dl'd succesfully, but am having some trouble accessing the repousse options. Succumbs to graphic card errors. I have checked the settings: Edit/prefferences/performance, and the "open GL Drawing claims to be on and video card detected.

Question regarding PortableApps platform and U3 enabled drives.

Submitted by d_byrnes on June 19, 2010 - 3:10pm

I have a Sandisk 16GB Cruzer, U3 enabled, with the Portable Apps platform in a sub-directory, meaning that it doesn't automatically launch on insertion, though the U3 Launchpad does load. When the U3 components load, it creates a "virtual" CD drive and a separate applications drive. My question is this: If I move the Portable Apps to the root of the applications drive, will the PA autorun.inf file overwrite the U3 Launchpad's autorun.inf, thus disabling the U3 capabilities? I´m not really sure how the U3 architecture works, so I want to ask someone here before I even consider this.

Task Coach vs. Lightning

Submitted by fcoulter on June 16, 2010 - 3:57pm

A new version of Task Coach has just been released. As I am (slowly) migrating to portable open source applications, I have yet to migrate to a decent task manager. Has anyone prepared a decent comparison of Task Manager and the Lightning add-in for Thunderbird? I don't know which way I should go and would appreciate advice, thoughts, etc.
