Installing to a deeper path, not drive root

Submitted by ugumba on August 26, 2008 - 8:10am

I run PortableApps from my harddrive, and for various reasons, the suite is installed to a deeper path, not a root directory.

This leads to a small annoyance: Every time I run a PA installer, it's unable to locate my PA root. The installer then suggests simply (e.g.) "\Notepad++" as the installation directory, which won't work. I need to edit the path every time.

I propose that the installer is modified to also support an environment variable for such a use case. In my case, I would set this as, e.g.
PORTABLEAPPS=C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin
at the system level.

Another(?) way to use PortableApps portably

Submitted by ugumba on August 26, 2008 - 7:48am

Just a quick note to whomever is interested:

I just registered for the forum, and felt that my way of using PortableApps was not adequately represented in the registration form.

I use the suite on all my PCs (4 physical, 1 work laptop, a couple of virtual machines, and 1 USB stick) - however, I use unison to synchronize the PortableApps folder between all of these instances. (Any other 2-way, conflict-resolving synchronization utility should be fine.)

Another ilegal distribution...

Check this one... http://www.lupopensuite.com/

And is also distributed in this website (in Spanish)... http://www.jambitz.com/descargas/2008/08/22/lupo-pensuite-v662

How do I know that is an ilegal distribution? because it's distributing CCleaner, Firefox, Foxit Reader, IrfanView, and Opera with the platform, and the platform is just a skin of portableapps.com

UI needs/suggestions

Submitted by goinportable on August 25, 2008 - 4:15pm

I'm not quite sure where these suggestions belong, so please move it if necessary.

The first thing I need is for the PortableApps menu to stay on top of other windows. I have set up a hotkey to display the menu but it often displays under the topmost window.

Second, I would love an integrated hotkey to display the window (I currently use AutoHotKey to accomplish this - but it only works on my machines - those that have AutoHotKey already installed).

Third, I would love to be able to arrow through the menu and hit "Enter" to run a portable app.

Getting CVS working on a Portable Hard Drive

Submitted by mathemajor on August 23, 2008 - 9:59pm

Hey Everybody!

Longtime forum lurker and portable apps user, but first time poster here. I am just getting into CVS for the first time through a new CVS repository on mozdev I created for my new Sunbird/Lightning extension. Because I am in my undergrad, I typically program on at least ten different computers in various locations around campus, at work, and at home. I have hence been trying to find a way to get a CVS client up and running on my portable hard drive so that I may access my files and website on mozdev from anywhere.

I just did a search on sf.net for "portable" and our main page came up on page 3 after things like GAIM portable and other old projects now merged into the one.
Is there anything one can do about that becaue I think it sucks.

Pocket PC Compatability

Submitted by DeadlyRed on August 22, 2008 - 1:34pm

Hi, first time poster, however I'm a pretty long time user of portableapps. I was wondering if the apps can be executed from an SDHC card on a PDA, such as the iPaq 3835 which I own. I believe it is a windows based os, but still who knows if it'd work. I'd like to get some firefox/thunderbird running on it, and for my portable devices this has always been my first place to look. Any help is greatly appreciated!
