UPXing installers?

Submitted by StephenQ on December 9, 2007 - 7:12am

Hey there,
I hear UPX is a useful tool. I have various EXEs on my usb drive, and i was wondering what can be UPXed.
Will doing this an installer file make much difference? It does DLL's too?
What are the best switches to use? (--best?)

Launching Portableapps from separate partition

Submitted by PC-GURU on December 8, 2007 - 9:19pm

I have wanted for some time to be able to start portableapps automaticaly upon the insertion of my flash drive like U3 does.
So I did a search, and this is what I came up with.(http://www.mcgrewsecurity.com/research/hackingU3/)

I'm not into hacking but it did work for me.
I can autorun .exe files in the iso partition just fine, but I'm wondering how to autorun PortableApps (which is installed in the main partition)from the iso partition.
can anyone help me?

Custom application folder, or custom path for each application. Is it possible?

Submitted by alexds9 on December 8, 2007 - 12:04pm

I don't want to use "PortableApps" folder for my applications. I want PortableAppsMenu to use custom path for each application. Is it possible now, or this function supposed to be added later?

It's very important issue for me, and that's why I can't use PortableAppsMenu now.

Themes and Icon on my device

Submitted by Pelaez-1 on December 7, 2007 - 5:13pm

Hi, I got portable apps today and I like it a lot.
I got the main file from the website, the 86meg one, and it installed a couple of things in my USB, then I installed more "manually".

I noticed that it changed my USB's name to "PortableApps" and the icon to the PortableApps' icon.

I tried renaming it, I even used the U3 software to rename it, and it went back to PortableApps

I decided to move the files from the Root to a Programs folder I had, but the name and Icon still there.

Can someone tell me how to fix that? I don't like having it that way...

"Other" folder

I know that open source requires to have the source available, but many people (like me), just don't use or don't know how to use the source... here at PApps.com the source is included in the folder "other" when a PApp is installed in our PDrives... but that increases the size of the installers/downloads...

My question is, is it possible to make the installers without the sources, and keep the sources in a separated download in the same PApp page? that way Apps like Portable OpenOffice will be smaller downloads/installers and faster install process.

...Just a suggestion.

PortableApp Launcher INIs

Submitted by phaze424 on December 6, 2007 - 4:25pm

I didn't know exactly where to put this, because it relates to all apps, but here goes. I have a USB flash drive with almost all of the currently available PortableApps on it, as well as a few other apps i have added, such as uTorrent, foobar2000, and CamStudio. However, I don't like the splash screens that are displayed by the PortableApps launchers. Of course, the easy fix for this is to use the INIs provided in the Other\*PortableSource folders, but I deleted all of the Other folders.
