wearing level

Submitted by dinosoep on January 5, 2010 - 3:07pm

Every cell in your usb stick can be overwrited a limited time, luckely we have a lot of cells and it can be overwrited a lot.
I use my usb stick verry much and love portable apps but one thing pulled my attention: running portable firefox,... keeps it flashing over and over.
its because it downloads its webpages in the cache but isn't it a better programming habit to store everyting in the temporary folder and at the end when closing perform a check and write al changed data to the memorystick.
I think its better but does this fit in the portable idea?
are there anny problems with this?

HI,

I use "PortableApps" for about a Year, and I must say, it is great. But today a study colleague shows me an other site:
**************** Edit: better to delete

What is the difference? The design looks similar, but the one site use a red color with a white arrow on a grey background, an the other site is designed in blue, withe the white arrow on a golden background.

I don´t understand why Sad

Extracting the PortableApps EXE file on Linux?

Submitted by Krellan on January 5, 2010 - 1:22am

I downloaded this file:

PortableApps.com_Suite_Setup_1.5.2_en.exe

It's a Windows executable, of course. It works fine on Windows.

The installer just extracts a directory tree, it seems. I'm wondering if there's a way to "rip" this directory tree out of the installer, and obtain the files without having to run the installer?

Why would I want to do this? Reason is, I'm deploying a tool on Linux to automate the creation of many USB flash drives, in bulk.

I've found a near-fatal problem in the entire PortableApps solution, at least when running flash drives.

Sometimes, when my flash drive is plugged in, when I plug in my phone (to charge it mostly, other times to transfer a new picture or ringtone made in XnView or Audacity over), the "What do you want Windows to do?" box pops up for the phone... then for the flash drive. It's like plugging the phone in disconnects, then reconnects the flash drive. Is this normal?

Best Audio Format & Player

Submitted by jwesleycooper on January 2, 2010 - 1:53am

There are so many different audio formats and players that work with the PortableApps Platform... and I'm not quite sure which I should choose! How exactly do all the different player apps compare; and, especially compared to proprietary formats like mp3s, what differences are there between the multiple free formats that are supported by them?

Comments on my absence and the Cafe/Lupo issue...

Submitted by BrianAll on December 30, 2009 - 6:31pm

Well. I suppose I should start somewhere. Please accept my humble apologies for all the lurking that I have been doing, but I feel that the recent issues regarding CAFE Mod/eXpresso should be adressed by myself. This came to a head for me when I read the feature Lifehacker wrote on the Lupo ripoff.

Kevin Purdy (Lifehacker)...according to [John T. Haller's] tests, Coffee appears to be a near-total copy of C.A.F.E... We apologize to the authors of C.A.F.E. for credit not given, and encourage you to grab the original.
