Are you still using installed apps?

Do you use portable apps, not just on your Flash drive/external media but on your desktop computer also?

If so, are there are installed applications that you cannot live without, or haven't found a suitable portable alternative for?

I use very few installed applications on my desktop PC these days as there is a portable alternative for just about everything I do. I also feel good about not having to rely on expensive, commercial software to fulfill my needs.

Hi,

I was wondering about the apps on [link removed by mod Tim] a lot of them seem to be software that costs money (dreamweaver, etc) and I was wondering if they are legal. I dont think they are...are they?

Thanks for all replies!!!!

Portable applications must be installed?

Submitted by Dirki on October 4, 2009 - 5:08am

When I double click a file downloaded here to open a portalbe application a window opens asking for the language and then after clicking "OK" a second window says something like "...will assist you...through the installation...".

Does that mean there will be installed / copied / written anything to the registry or to somewhere else, what will stay on the PC (besides of a single folder with will contain the files of the application)?

Help with exe!

Hi everyone. I have a question: I've installed NetBeans portable in my flash drive. The executable file is in "K:\PortableApps\netbeans\bin" and I don't know how to configure to see the netbeans.exe in the portableApps menu. If the .exe is in "K:\PortableApps\netbeans" I can see the netbeans icon but when I execute it, it fails. How can I do to put the path on \netbeans\bin instead of \netbeans?
I hope you can help me! I need it!!

VLC/Thunderbird 3 Beta need updating

Submitted by ChaosChris2009 on September 30, 2009 - 5:54pm

I noticed that VLC 1.0.2 has been released, and also Thunderbird 3 Beta 4 has also been released

I've got both on my USB, but I'd like to update to the newer versions

Any time soon that they'll be updated, because I've not yet noticed it

and could somoneone please upload the installers to Dropbox or MediaFire

The firewall here at the library is way too strict due to filters, so I can't access Source Forge in order to download the installers to update Thunderbird + VLC

jamcomm temporary ban, now permanent

As some folks may have guessed (or hoped), jamcomm is now sitting out with a one week ban. After receiving a final warning two days ago, he'd continued with the attitude and had begun posting comments in all bold just to be annoying (since he had specifically been warned not to abuse the formatting in the forums). The ban will apply until October 6th and be lifted, giving him one last chance.

I know several moderators and developers are hoping for a permanent ban. I'm not a fan of such actions, but will take it if necessary.

Kind Regards,
John

Portable ColorPicker Suggestions

Anyone know of a portable Color picker application that has the ability to:

  1. Create/save/load color palettes
  2. Pick an average color using a predetermined area/sampling of pixels (rather than picking the exact color of 1 pixel)
  3. Generate CSS for things like hyperlinks using a selected set of colors (this is not so important)

It must have all the typical features you'd expect from a color picker such as:

  • View a magnified area of the area you are picking a color from
  • Copy color codes such as HTML to the clipboard
