ssl on portableapps.com

Submitted by jps on December 14, 2007 - 11:27am

I appreciate all websites who support ssl.

When visiting https://www.portableapps.com/ with firefox there is a warning becuase the certificate is for portableapps.com without www.

Afaik (I may be wrong) the standard way to deal with the certificate is to create it for the www.site.

+ is there still no certificate authority who creates free certificates (and built into browser by standard)?

NO NEW APPS WORK

Submitted by SuPerSoBBie on December 14, 2007 - 8:29am

OK I am having a real problem. I use to use your apps all the time on my work computer. but none of the new apps work. An example would be KeePas, it gives me a pop up saying "An unsupported operation was attempted". Another would be pidgen which returns "error loading pidgin.dll Error: (5) Access is denied" I am running pidgin, the real portable version, fine on my computer but yours does not work. A true portable app should run on all computers and not even try to load dlls.

Space usage question

Submitted by jeffm on December 14, 2007 - 2:54am

On the OpenOfficePortable page it says
File size: 77.4MB (download), ~219MB (installed)

I was looking at my flash drive and for the properties of my OOP install I see
Size: 229 MB (240,621,056 bytes)
Size on Disk: 325 MB (341,639,168 bytes)

I do have a few extra templates and addons installed into my OOP so that changes my file size some. My question is what is causing the disparity with the size and the size on disk? Is that something to be worried about?

TIA!!

Portable App Launcher - Links/Shortcuts

Submitted by xmezziahx on December 13, 2007 - 9:03pm

Hi John,

In the future, Can you include on the Portable App Launcher to run placed links/shortcuts on the Portable Apps Directory? In my opinion this would be cool for unzipped binaries placed elsewhere on the portable device and just linking the executables. Because I noticed that when i try to place the entire directory (e.g. nightly build of inkscape) all the exes are shown in the menu. I cant delete the other executables just to prevent them from showing up. It's just a small detail to add. Thanks

What is really left behind with portable apps?

Submitted by Anthony A on December 13, 2007 - 12:25am

I have been using the portable apps suite from a thumb drive on a machine for the last couple of weeks. I was curious to see what is left behind when using these portable apps. I ran Nirsoft Regscanner 1.60. I punched in "portableapps" and ran a scan of the whole Registry. This is what I found. 78 items. Please explain.

Q: Is there any difference between "USB 2.0" speed and 15Mbps in real life ?
Q: is #5 fairly fast ?

Getting Started

Submitted by 12s13w78 on December 11, 2007 - 9:30am

I click PortableApps_Suite_Standard_1.0.exe

The Setup form appears with my USB drive populated.

I click Install and get this 7-mix: Diagnostic message:
D:\PortableApps_Suite_Standard_1.0.exe is not supported archive

I tried changing the file name to PortableAppsSuite.exe

What do I do?

Thanks,
Weaver

Opera Not Working with Portable Apps Menu... I need help.

Submitted by flipjarg on December 11, 2007 - 4:18am

I am using the Portable Apps Menu from Portableapps.com. All other apps load correctly except for Opera portable. I've tried removing the Opera and using a fresh version but it still does not solve the problem. I've also tried this on several computer... I usually get the same error with different drives, whichever one the USB stick was mounted to.

I keep getting the messages:

Command Line:

Loading the last position file
The last position was E:\
The current position is E:\
Same position, nothing to do

Windows Error (with ok button):

Rescue Dead Laptop

Submitted by gwrussell on December 11, 2007 - 2:45am

I had a hard disk go bad on my laptop and thought the whole thing was toast. But I discovered the BartPE bootable windows CD (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder), and further discovered that PortableApps work just fine on it. Computer rescued. Actually I can still use the old hard disk to retrieve files, since it still hasn't fully crashed yet; it's just not up to the load of running windows.

Any other similar experiences?

Gary
