As I am sure that many of you have guessed I am working hard on the next version of Toucan, however there are some decisions that need to be made so I thought I'd ask you all for your opinions on a few points.

Languages

Firstly I am overhauling the language system in Toucan as the one in 1.1 wasn't really fit for purpose, which is why there are no language packs avalible. There are three options as to how it could work,

Best of both worlds - Linux and PortableApps

Submitted by cybernut on August 17, 2007 - 3:06pm

I'm not sure if anyone else has done this but here goes.

I travel a lot and like the idea of a USB key to give me some feeling of security when I'm working on a public computer. I've used PortableApps for the last few the years to work on foreign computers. I recently switched to PCLinuxOS (6 months now) and that has become my OS of choice. Using Linux requires booting the device with the USB key in it but some computers don't allow that.

Network Drive Warning

Submitted by ivar on August 17, 2007 - 11:14am

My home network has a NAS device (Buffalo Link Station). When I install portable apps to this network share, everything works, except that when running any programm, including the menu, Windows XP always complains and tells me that "The publisher could not be verified" and asks if I really want to run this program.

This extra step is just plain irritating. Is there any way to turn this off?

Antivirus

Ok first thing is first,
I have searched the forum for a good anti-virus,but i can't really find one, here is what i really want:

*-Something like Kaspersky, but portable and run off a USB, It should prompt before letting anything in to the pendrive,(true that some pendrive has lock, which write-protects the USB, but mine doesn't)

-It should be stable, no beta or anything that isn't really developed.

-Something that has a great GUI

*-something Free

Giving more importance to points marked with *

Flash Drives

Submitted by palapaguy on August 16, 2007 - 11:42pm

I've come to depend on my flash drive and PortableApps a lot, and lifetime of the drive has become an issue. They don't last forever, ya know. And now I need to buy a larger one.

I haven't been able to find any info on the relative quality or expected lifetime of the flash drives from the various manufacturers. Is there a difference in lifetime? Is there a "best" flash drive I can buy for reliability? Is there a brand I should avoid?
