Updater Error?

Submitted by joshengle on October 24, 2011 - 9:28am

First I must say how exciting the new platform releases are. So Excited to see so many of the features we have been waiting for in practice!!
However since upgrading, when the portableapps menu starts up I get the following error: "The PortableApps.com Updater must be run from the PortableApps.com Platform. It will not function properly when run directly."

I have checked my ini to see if it was still being invoked from there (Part of my old way of launching the diff apps I need). But the Updater is only being called by the platform - ie i ticked auto update in the options menu.

Attempting to install 4.1 on a fresh USB drive. Norton Internet Security 2012 finds s.ml.app "suspicious" and installation fails. Turning off NIS and installing results in installation but no applications in the menu.

Optimal Virtual Memory (paging file) setting for PORTABLE APPS?

Submitted by Logos A on October 23, 2011 - 7:51am

I am running PORTABLE APPS on a very old computer with the following specs

1.87 gigahertz Intel Pentium M
1024 Megabytes RAM
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Since I dont have much RAM , and firefox portable is a huge memory hog.So I have to rely on XP to increase my virtual memory.Ive set the virtual memory for my main hard drive to stay between 300-100mb.This is working, but it does get slow after running all day.

Should I increase this?or set XP to automatically manage it?

OPTIMAL Filesystem / Allocation unit size to use for PORTABLE APPS?

Submitted by Logos A on October 23, 2011 - 6:38am

I've decided to format my flash media on several computers and reinstall the latest PORTABLE APPS pre release 4.1.Im going to be running it from the following:

512 mb Micro SD card
2 GB Micro SD card
1 GB USB flash drive

So what is the most efficient format option for each scenario (since since each is dependant on drive size)

FAT (FAT16)
FAT32
NTFS
exFAT

Also what allocation size should I use for the clusters?

4k,16k,32k, ......512k,1024k, .....ETC,ETC

I have read this post https://portableapps.com/node/15053

L'aggiornamento causa l'intervento del Norton AV che indica il file startportableapps come infetto dal virus Suspicious.S.MLApps. Norton cancella il file e il programma non funziona più

Speeding up PortableApps menu start at first insertion??

Submitted by softfoot on October 19, 2011 - 3:48am

I *love* my portable apps setup - it has dug me out of the "brown stuff" more often than I care to admit!

However, I have a 16GB flash stick with a *LOT* of portable apps and other usefull tools installed and as a result it cane take 10 seconds for the menu to be accessible after insertion in the USB slot in the fastest machine I have and on several others it can take as long as 30 seconds.

I suspect that this is due to the menu rescanning the apps and updating its contents.

Merging Multiple PortableApps Directories

I have an issue that I haven't seen posted anywhere else.

My wife and I both use PortableApps.com platform applications. We use several applications that are specifically configured for our own use (for example, Thunderbird), and we like to keep these separate.

We also both want to use the same software on our home computer, so we use it from our C: drive primarily, and sync the folders to USB drives when we travel out of town, which is very, very often.

Error message on PortableApps platform launch

Submitted by mgrad92 on October 18, 2011 - 6:44am

I've just updated to the new "PA.c Platform 'Next' Pre-Release 4.1", which I know is a test and is expected to have issues. One issue I've found is an error message that displays upon every platform launch. It reads: "The PortableApps.com Updater must be run from the PortableApps.com Platform. It will not function properly when run directly."
