Can't Tell What the Apps Do

Submitted by mrcolj on December 7, 2011 - 2:53pm

This is surely a common problem. I load up my PA.c menu, and am faced with all sorts of trendily-named programs, and can't remember what any of them do. Most of them I installed because they sounded like a good idea when I was looking at a list of all their descriptions, but now I can't remember the difference in Mnemosyme, Tipp10, Daphne, MTR, and Zint.

So, whereas there's a lovely description on portableapps.com, and another when you hit Install A New App from the menu, would it be easy to show these in the mouseover tooltips, or possibly allow users to edit the tooltips?

Menu search misses second key if you type fast

I've noticed that if you are a fast enough typist, the search in the menu can miss the second key.

Examining things carefully, it appears to have to do with people (like me) that tend to depress the next key before lifting the prior one.

The search seems to react only to keyup events, but the input box for searching needs to see the keydown in order to pay attention to the keyup.

So the timeline goes like this (example of searching for "firefox"):

a bug or something?

I got this following error: "Access violation at address 0046204A in module 'PortableAppsPlatform.exe'. Read of address 490260F6." after selecting the option to disable the scrollbar.
And also this error when right click and selecting eject:
"Exception EAccessViolation in module PortableAppsPlatform.exe at 00004EF4.
Access violation at address 00404EF4 in module 'PortableAppsPlatform.exe'. Read of address 0000002A."
Anyone else having the same problems?

Scrollbar

No scrollbar appears when listed all applications, and also not the the "old" arrows up and down. Cannot scroll the applications. Scrollbar appears only when folders are shown. I work on Windows XP.

Suggestion? Next Pre-Relase 5 minimize to tray

Submitted by drsprite on December 5, 2011 - 11:22am

Hi,

I just upgraded to the Next Pre-Release 5 and really like it. I enjoy the layout and the app updater worked great on all the older apps.

Just one suggestion (I think), unless I am missing it?

How can I minimize the PA.c Platform it to the tray? This way it doesn't take up space in my task bar.

I am on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Thank you

Suggestion - Application sets

Submitted by OLLI_S on December 4, 2011 - 10:48am

Hello,

I have a new suggestion for the Portable Apps Platform.
In following I write PAP for "Portable Apps Platform".
By the way: I am using the version 4.2 of the PAP.

When I start the PAP, I have 7 applications that I always start.
So every day I have to click 7 times on the PAP menu and select the desired application.

Here it would be useful to define sets of applications.
A set is a name and a bundle of installed portable applications.
Sets are also shown in the PAP app list so I can search for them and also start them.

UNC issues and updating from PA.com menu is giving errors

Submitted by robw on December 2, 2011 - 8:21am

HI all,

I'm running into some issues with the latest 4.2 release of the PA.com platform.

First of all, I'm running a lot of portable apps from my server, so the path is \\servername\apps\portableapp
This way it doesn't matter what pc I sitting behind at the house, and it's easily copied to a portable HD for using 'on the road.

Buty here are my 'issues':

First I tried to install PA.com onto the server, but it cannot resolve the UNC path and throws a location error. I just installed on a local HD and moved the files over. Workaround> solved!

Suggestion - Show Installed Apps

Submitted by OLLI_S on December 1, 2011 - 4:30pm

Hello,

I have a new suggestion for the Portable Apps Platform.
In following I write PAP for "Portable Apps Platform".
By the way: I am using the version 4.2 of the PAP.

The "Portable App Directory" just displays apps, that I do not have installed.
For an error report I wanted to see what apps I have installed (a complete list), but this is not possible.
Such a list would also be useful to show it to colleagues and friends.

An Idea would be a Checkbox below the list with the text "Show installed apps".
If this box is checked, then also all installed apps are shown.

Suggestion - Outdated Apps + Version Number

Submitted by OLLI_S on December 1, 2011 - 4:26pm

Hello,

I have a new suggestion for the Portable Apps Platform.
In following I write PAP for "Portable Apps Platform".
By the way: I am using the version 4.2 of the PAP.

Some apps (like "System Explorer") are outdated.
Means that the version offered as portable app is older than version offered on the official home page of the app.

Here it would be useful to see this information while downloading apps via the PAP (in the "Portable App Directory" window).
You also should show the version number of all portable apps in a separate column.
