Feature Addition: Scanning multiple directories for apps, opinions sought

There have been a few requests over the years to have the PortableApps.com Platform scan additional paths for apps. The rationale is usually that users want to keep non-PAF apps separate from PAF apps or apps that are updated automatically by the platform separate from those that are not. I'm planning on implementing this within a future release of the PortableApps.com Platform and wanted to layout the setup and see if there are any comments or suggestions.

Please report any bugs you find with the platform here. There is a separate forum thread for localization discussion and another for apps that need an update. Bug reports made in comments will be deleted once added to this categorized list. Duplicate reports will be removed. Fixed bugs are listed in the PortableApps.com Platform Change-log.

Is it possible to use a modified installer that hashes and then re-uses files that are not modified?

Submitted by jr2 on May 30, 2023 - 6:25pm

For example, if a Firefox update changes two files, firefox.exe and a .dll, why are all PortableApps users re-downloading the entire Firefox installer? you could just have the installer use an index of the updated installer files, CRC32 or some other hash to verify the already installed unchanged versions, then supply the updated files.

Also, if the altered portions of the updated file contents are very small, you could use something like ParPar to patch those, yielding even more bandwidth.

Firefox, Firefox Developer, and Firefox Nightly Portable editions may not work at the same time.

Submitted by ianasystems on May 25, 2023 - 8:58am

Hello,

I have installed the Firefox Portable edition and it is working very fine. I also downloaded the Firefox Developer Portable edition and Firefox Nightly Portable edition, but the problem is that these applications do not work at the same time. I have to close and run them one by one for them to work.

I have this alert message.

Another instance of Firefox is already running.
Please close other instance of Firefox before launching Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition.

Please help!

Thank you.

Interaction between PortableApps startup and non-Portable Firefox Bookmarks

Submitted by renaldafeen on May 23, 2023 - 3:12pm

Whenever I start or shut down the main PortableApps application using Start.exe (or a shortcut for it), a very odd behavior occurs...
I have Firefox installed on my computer as a non-portable app. It is up to date and runs without any issues I have seen. I do NOT have the portable version of Firefox installed as a PortableApp.

[Solved] Add a Customer File in "Main" (AppNamePortable) folder

> No other files are present in this directory by default.

Here my "Main" (AppNamePortable) local folder with my added file:

Here-My-Custom-File-Local.png

I want to add this "Here_My_Custom_File" in "Main" (AppNamePortable) folder of the "PAF.exe" file.

Uninstall and Symbolic Links

Submitted by noki on May 12, 2023 - 9:46am

I guess this is more of a feature request.
Currently when you uninstall an app via the platform, the contents of symbolic links to sub folders are also removed in stead of just the link.
In my case, for some apps (like visual studio code) I have a symbolic link to the data folder. Installing a new version of Visual studio code takes 2 steps:
- delete the old visual studio code folder via windows explorer (this only removes the link, not the contents)
- create a now symbolic link to the data folder
