Using PortableApps with Dropbox, Linux and Windows

So I have installed PortableApps at work in my Dropbox folder. Everything works great from that end. When I get home, I use Linux & Dropbox. Some Portable Apps are telling me that the path is different and that it is not recommended for me to "move" things like this.

Will I break anything if I answer "yes" to continue with the new path?

Can I map a "fake" Z: drive in linux to avoid these "broken" paths?

Any help is appreciated.

Upcoming Features Confirmed Coming In An Upcoming Release

Submitted by baniaczek on August 5, 2013 - 3:18pm

The list ( https://portableapps.com/node/28593 ) is impressive.

"BAT file on start and exit for advanced users with platform env vars available"

Could I suggest to not restrict to BAT only?

It would be great to specify the full command (relative path to command and relative paths as arguments)

Not only

cmd /k something.bat

Something like:

"..\TccLe\App\tcc.exe" /D /@"..\TccLe\data\tcc.ini" /C "..\TccLe\data\PortableStart.btm"

Updater hangs

Submitted by Ackael on August 4, 2013 - 2:02pm

Hi, since a few weeks the automatic updater doesn't work any more:
After I click to update the apps that are listed it says "Connecting..." but nothing more happens.

So now I can only update from the website.
I already re-installed the PA platform but no success.
On my other computer I have no problems.

Furthermore I cannot open the list of other available apps. The error message says that this may be due to the updater running. In fact is the same program, which hangs too, so I have to kill it with the task manager.

Start.exe Required Me To Run As Administrator To Work

Submitted by penguin123 on July 30, 2013 - 11:37pm

I have been having a problem with the PortableApps Start.exe located in the root of my drive. When I double click to start the launcher, it gives me "The PortableAppsPlatform.exe file is not a valid PortableApps..com release and cannot be launched." However, if I run the program as an Administrator, it will launch with no problems. I have done a virus scan of Start.exe on Virustotal and it shows a 0/46 detection ratio.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Automatic Updates

Submitted by LadySirgay on July 29, 2013 - 1:56pm

Hello Again everyone:

Now and then, I run across a problem with my portable apps. I am using the 11.2 version, and am unable to update my apps.

Last night I saw a lot of automatic updates for the portable apps I have in my menu on my USB drive, (16 gig) so, I clicked to install the updates. I received a confirmation massage that the updates were available in the menu. I thought no more about it. I shut down my computer, and unplugged the USB drive as usual.

Portable Apps Won't Start On One Computer

Submitted by dhartsoc on July 23, 2013 - 2:18am

My work pc suddenly won't read my usb drive. It is running XP and Computer Management / Storage identifies the drive present but it is not mounted. Tried 2 other pcs at work, one Win7, the other XP. Both read the drive. All run identical antivirus software. Portable Apps run fine on both of them.

Same at home with two Win7 and one XP computer. Any thoughts on what I might look for? Frustrating because it is not working on the computer I use the most and it is reading other USB devices.

I thought I had posted this earlier in the day but I never saw it appear

Updater starts update after auto-run off app

I consider this a bug. You know you need to check for update of an app at startup. You also know that app is marked for auto-start, and you have the limitation of not being able to update it while it is running. It's clearly a bug. You trip yourself and call not doing it a feature?
However I see something similar in the list of features for the future.

Delay apps set to autorun until after the updater has done a check, possibly not starting the ones that require an update

Minor documentation issue on portableapps.com website - how to install an app is slightly wrong

Submitted by pbl on July 8, 2013 - 12:28pm

I hope this is the correct location for this issue. I did not find another way to report this.

Here https://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#installing

It says: just click Options and then Install a New App
in 2 different locations.

With the current version of the platform, it should say:
just click Apps and then Install a New App

desktop dissapear when platform on

Submitted by ottosykora on July 6, 2013 - 2:26am

I have set the w7icon to be onnly in the tray and not in the task bar.
However, this has the effect that all contetents of the w7 desktop are hidden as long as the platform is on.

How can I hide the icon in the task bar and have it only in the tray but keep the desktop?

I was using mainly the 1.6 Platform so far , so all such effect are somehow new to me.

PortableApps does not start or update normally

Submitted by khs10uk on July 5, 2013 - 3:54pm

In the root folder of the USB stick, when I click on the usual START icon for PortableApps, I get this warning:

>>>>
The PortableAppsPlatform.exe file is not a valid PortableApps.com release and can not be launched.
>>>>

Yet when I go into the PortableApps folder, then go into PortableApps.com and click on PortableAppsPlatform.exe, the application starts.

BUT, having opened, I get the error box:

>>>>
