Suddenly Carbide 8GB will not open:

Submitted by beeje on March 3, 2014 - 12:08am

Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.~~

the above is now the message I am getting when trying to open my Carbide as of 2 days ago. No problems prior since purchase in Dec 2013. It is showing as Unknown Device in Device Mgr but not showing in Windows Explorer. I have data on it that I must be able to access so returning it under the warranty for a replacement is not an option. why would this suddenly be happening and what is the possible solution?

Problem using on multi monitor setup.

Submitted by Andy22 on February 26, 2014 - 4:25am

Hi,

i use portable apps on multiple locations via cloud sync. The problem is that one location is a multiple monitor setup.

If i move windows to the secondary monitor and close portable apps, this change gets synced with all other settings. This effectively means that now some programs are "invisible" on the none existing secondary monitor on some of my other work places.

Is there a way to resolve this from portable app's? Atm i need to use UltraMon + hotkey to move those windows back.

thx
Andy

App launching process

Submitted by PortableUser2009 on February 4, 2014 - 5:47am

Hi John,

I am a little bit confused about the app launching process.
So this is what I did so far.

According to the documentation I created an application folder AppName for my app. In this I put my AppName.exe. After that I created sub folders App\AppInfo and App\AppName.
In the folder App\AppInfo I created a file appinfo.ini holding the settings for the appearance in the platform and the appicon.ico file.
In the folder App\AppName I simply put the file AppName.exe.
Now I created a folder App\AppInfo\Launch and there I created a file AppName.ini. This contains

How to pin portable apps to the windows 7 taskbar?

Submitted by Crogge on February 1, 2014 - 4:02am

Dear Portableapps Community,

First of all I would like to say that I really like Portableapps and use most apps on a daily base.

The only issue which I have is that I can't pin apps to my taskbar, I understand that a loader is used for each app so it are actually two different binary files.

I found also this tutorial:
https://portableapps.com/node/31515

It creates the shortcut but I CAN'T move it to the taskbar it shows a red icon (Cause its a external drive?), I created a pin with the app "TaskBarPinner" but in the end I get the same result as with a general shortcut:

Location of exe file

Submitted by PortableUser2009 on January 31, 2014 - 1:56pm

Hi John,

I have a liitle question.

To launch a portable app requiring java I created an exe file that lauches the app using jPortableLauncher. If I copy the exe to the main app folder under the PortableApps folder it gets recognized by the platform and can be started properly.

To improve the app structure I would appreciate to locate the exe file in a sub folder like app\launcher\exe because it is not part of the initial application and my exe file will be effected by an later update if I keep it in the main folder.

Some but not all apps unable to access web

Submitted by petergrainge on January 22, 2014 - 2:30pm

Firefox and Thunderbird can both access the web from my external USB hard disk.
FileZilla, Quite RSS, GreatNews, Opera and Skype all fail. If I run Skype from the internal hard disk it works fine. I uninstalled Skype and installed a new version. No change.
Does anyone have an idea as to where I should start looking please?
If I have posted in the wrong forum, please advise where I should ask.

windows 8.1 error when running apps non-elevated

Submitted by skroslak on December 26, 2013 - 5:22pm

hi,

I'm using portableapps platform for many years now, without any blocker errors so far, but since I upgraded to Win 8.1 64-bit (or maybe it is also related to some other change), I can't run some of the apps as non-elevated user. It is also valid for PortableApps platform itself.

see, when I try to run PortableApps platform by double-clicking on Start.exe , I'll get:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jbejfdft2daze5c/Screenshot%202013-12-26%2023.1...
when I right-click and choose "as administrator" it runs ok.
