Removing unwanted .exe files from the PortableAppsMenu

Submitted by petrsimanek on January 26, 2007 - 4:27am

Hi all,

when I put an application into PortableApps directory, ALL .exe files will be listed in PortableAppsMenu, including e.g. update.exe or any "background running" .exe files.
I'd love to have the possibility to remove only that unwanted .exe files from the Menu (not the application itself). In other words, to select, which .exe files will be listed.
And also the possibility to rename the listed files would be nice.

I suggest this to consider while preparing the next versions of PortableAppsMenu.

Changing Program Titles

Submitted by gutterdog2 on January 25, 2007 - 5:50pm

Maybe I missed how to change this, but recently I installed a new app, but the name that showed up in the menu wasnt recognizable to indicate the app I installed. I installed a french program and it says "version fransais" instead of the program name.

It would be nice if we could rename these titles in the menu.

A few good ideas....

I have not been into PortableApps.com for long, but I find it highly useful. But there are a few things that have been bothering me. These are not complaints mind you, they are just a few suggestions that came to me.

Auto Update

Submitted by dannyoneill on January 24, 2007 - 6:26am

Ive been working on an Auto Update installer.

It works by first adding a new Sub Menu item onto the PA Menu to check for updates. This then closes the PAM and launches the Auto Update util.

The util works by contacting a web server and downloading an update.ini which it reads. The update.ini lists things like what the udpate name is, where to get it what to do with it etc etc.

It then downlods, applys the update, checks the version and finsishs, it also can handle errors and if the versio is the same.

PAM (latest from John released) with additions

Submitted by iamacooldude on January 22, 2007 - 6:59pm

This is the latest version of my additions to the PAM. These include the unfinished eject when exit to the now addition of changing wallpaper. It will change the wallpaper to one in "App/DefaultData/Wallpaper/MyWallPaper.bmp". It will change it back to the previous wallpaper after exiting. I know the eject might be bothersome to some(an extra message box on closing), but I might get different results and be able to fix it. Anyone wanting thier hands on a newest "beta" of some needed changes, please try this out.

Creating an application with PortableApps in mind

Submitted by miquelfire on January 19, 2007 - 3:59pm

I'm making an application and would like it have a native portable edition that can be installed easily in the PortableApps menu, however, I can't see a clear way to do that just yet. It seems almost everyone has only dealt with apps they know too little about to do anything but make a native version to run from a key.
