Firefox Portable

Slow Start From Non-Portable Drive

Submitted by Firefairy on April 20, 2010 - 4:11pm

I am currently testing applications before transferring them to my flash drive. Even after the initial "install" load, Firefox Portable takes several minutes to load.

The test directory housing all the files I intend to transfer to my flash drive is on my Desktop. I am running Vista, with privileges. My installed version of FF loads lightning-fast, even with addons and history and such. I did all the performance improving tips listed on the FFP page, which sped it up from about 5 minutes to 2-3 minutes to load. Once FFP loads, it runs fine.

What am I missing?

Firefox 3.6.3 Portable and Hiren's Mini Windows XP

Submitted by JohSeg on April 18, 2010 - 9:10am

If I boot with Mini Windows XP on Hiren's BootCD 10.1 I can't download files. Browsing is no problems. In the Downloads window (Ctrl+J) I get an Canceled-message. The same thing if I try to save an picture. But if I use an old version of Firefox (1.something) that already is installed on the HDD (of course still using Hiren's Mini Windows XP) everything works great. How come?

I've to boot with Hiren's Mini Windows XP because of HDD boot failure.

Sorry for my bad English Smile

FireFox Portable isn't (portable)

Submitted by 2bnewb on April 17, 2010 - 9:31am

FFP 3.6 on XP home.

I downloaded it and installed a bunch of extensions, moved my toolbars around, edited my menus, made some bookmarks, things were going good.

Then I moved it to my usb stick. Not even on a different system, just moved it to the stick. All my book marks are gone. A couple toolbars I created and one from an extension have vanished, my toolbars are all hosed up with Icons in places they are not supposed to be and half the icons I placed on them are missing. My menus are back to the default or close to it.

Minefield Portable install error

Regarding the downloader/installer for the 3.7 alpha 4, it is getting a 404 when trying to download the package.

This seems like a useful installer and I would like to request the following, if it is a valid proposition. Can you please tell us which type of package the installer requires and then allow us to manually download the version of our choice for the installer to then create a portable version? Is this feasible or do you do your own fine tuning for each version?

How portable are plugins for FFportable?

Submitted by sweatshirt on April 16, 2010 - 4:39pm

I am trying to create a CD with FFportable and a set of HTML pages and PDF docs.
The PDF docs are accessed via the HTML pages.

on vista:
- created a directory with FFportable and html pages to show
- copied the contents of the plugins directory of the FF version installed on vista to the plugins directory for FFportable
- created bootable ISO file from directory
- mounted ISO
- FFportable starts ok
- selecting a PDF file from a html page launches plugin (nppdf32.dll) to view the PDF
- started virtual machine running W2K.

on W2K:
- copied the bootable ISO file to W2K

Gmail Gears Offline downloading EVERYTHING!

Submitted by Also on April 15, 2010 - 1:24pm

Well...
Love and use Portable Firefox.
Managed to install Gears on to it so I can use offline GMail :oD
However- it seems to want to download EVERYTHING swamping my 2gb drive with 7gb of e-mail (which of course doesn't fit) where upon Firefox fails to load and crashes due to lack of space!

Anyone got an idea as to whether this is a case I need to tweak the local settings manually somewhere?
